How TikTok decides who sees a video

When you post, TikTok first checks the video against its rules, sometimes with a person reviewing it. Then it shows the video to a small test group, often people who follow you and people who watch similar content. If they watch it to the end, like it or share it, TikTok shows it to more people. At zero views, the video has not even reached that first test group. That means something is stopping it at the start: a setting, a review, a restriction, or an upload that never finished.

Check the video and account settings

1. Open your profile and check for a lock icon on the video, which means it is private.
2. Open the video › three dots › Privacy settings. Set Who can watch this video to Everyone.
3. Open Settings and privacy › Privacy and make sure Private account is off.
4. Under 16? TikTok makes accounts private by default and limits where videos appear. That is a rule, not a bug.

Is your video under review?

New videos sometimes go through an extra check before they are shown. You may see a notice or nothing at all. Most reviews finish within a few hours. Videos with medical, financial, political or violent topics, or with people who look under 18, are more likely to be reviewed. Waiting is the only fix; deleting and reposting starts the review over.

Check Account status for violations

Open Settings and privacy › Account › Account status. TikTok lists any violations, which videos were removed or limited, and whether your account has restrictions. A video may also be marked Ineligible for For You feed, which means followers can see it but it will not be recommended. You can appeal from the same screen. Appeals usually get a reply within a few days.

Shadowban or normal slow start?

People often call any drop in views a shadowban. TikTok says it does not hide accounts secretly, but it does limit videos that break rules or that it marks ineligible for recommendations, and it tells you in Account status or the video's analytics. If Account status is clear and your videos get a few views, you are not banned; the content is just not being picked up yet. A true zero across several videos in a row, with a clean status, often points to a new account, a network problem, or a device issue.

Brand new accounts

TikTok watches new accounts for spam behavior. Spend a few days using the app normally: watch, like and comment on videos in your niche. Fill in your profile with a photo and bio. Avoid following hundreds of accounts in a day. Then post. Many new accounts see their first videos at zero for a few hours, then views appear.

Content that TikTok limits

• Reposts and watermarks: videos downloaded from other platforms or with another app's logo get less reach.
• Unoriginal content: clips from movies, TV and other creators without your own changes.
• Music on business accounts: use the Commercial Music Library only.
• Links and contact info: asking people to go elsewhere can limit reach.
• Low quality: very short, blurry or silent clips get skipped and stall early.
• Sensitive topics: content near the line in the Community Guidelines may not be recommended.

Posting habits that hurt

Posting many videos within minutes can look like spam. Space them out, a few hours apart. Do not delete videos that underperform right away, since deleting often can also look suspicious. Using the same caption and hashtags on every video gives TikTok less to work with. Write a short caption that says what the video is about.

Check the upload itself

If the video never finished uploading, it may show on your profile but not to others. Weak signal is the usual cause. Open the video from another account or a browser while logged out to see whether it plays. If it does not, save your draft, delete the post and upload again on good Wi-Fi. Should you delete and repost?

Only after you check settings, wait a few hours and confirm Account status is clean. If one video is stuck at zero but the rest of your account is fine, reposting once, with a new caption, can work. Appeal a removed or limited video

1. Open the notification or Account status.
2. Tap the video and choose Submit an appeal.
3. Explain briefly why it follows the rules.
4. Wait for the result in your inbox. Do not repost while the appeal is open.

If your account is banned

A permanent ban shows a message when you open the app. You can appeal once. Making new accounts on the same device to get around a ban breaks TikTok's rules and those accounts are often banned too.

Quick checklist

• Account public, video set to Everyone.
• Account status clean.
• Waited at least a few hours.
• Original content and allowed music.
• Upload finished on a good connection.
• App and phone updated.

Views in analytics vs on the profile

The view count on your profile can lag behind. Open the video and tap the analytics icon (the bar chart or More data) to see live numbers, where traffic came from and how long people watched. If analytics shows views but the profile says 0, the count will catch up within hours. Analytics needs a creator or business account, which you can switch to for free in Settings and privacy › Account.

Region and language

TikTok shows videos first to people in your region. If your phone is set to another country, or you use a VPN, your test group may be very small. Set your phone's region to the United States if that is where you live, keep the app language in English if your audience speaks English, and turn off VPNs before posting.

Devices and multiple accounts

Running many accounts from one phone, or using automation apps for likes and follows, can get your videos limited. TikTok sees this as spam. Stick to a few accounts, and never buy followers or views. Bought views also make it harder for real viewers to find you, because the test group no longer reacts the way TikTok expects.

Video length and the first three seconds

TikTok watches whether people keep watching. A slow start makes viewers swipe, and the video stalls early. Put the most interesting moment in the first few seconds, add on-screen text, and keep the length to what the idea needs. This will not fix a true zero, but it decides what happens after the first few views.

Use TikTok's own tools

Post using TikTok's editor, sounds and effects when you can. Videos made in the app tend to do better than files exported from other apps. Add captions with the auto captions tool, which also helps people who watch with the sound off.

When to wait and when to act

Wait a few hours after posting. Check settings and Account status if views are still at zero. Appeal if a video was limited. Change your content habits if videos keep getting low views but not zero. A zero is usually fixable within a day.
