FaceTime not working? 9 fixes for iPhone and iPad

Try these 9 fixes in order

Check your connection.
FaceTime needs Wi-Fi or cellular data. Open a website to test it, and switch networks if it is slow.

Allow FaceTime to use cellular data.
Go to Settings › Cellular and make sure FaceTime is switched on in the app list.

Check FaceTime is on.
Go to Settings › Apps › FaceTime (Settings › FaceTime on older iOS). Turn it on, and under You Can Be Reached By FaceTime At, tick your number and email.

Turn FaceTime off and on.
Switch it off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on.

Set the date and time automatically.
Go to Settings › General › Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.

Check Screen Time restrictions.
Go to Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps & Features and turn on FaceTime and Camera.

Restart the iPhone and update iOS.
Both people should be on a recent version of iOS, especially for Group FaceTime.

Check Apple’s system status.
Visit Apple’s System Status page and look for FaceTime.

Sign out of FaceTime and back in.
In FaceTime settings, tap your Apple Account, choose Sign Out, then sign in again.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the FaceTime app missing from my iPhone?
It may be restricted in Screen Time. Go to Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps & Features and turn on FaceTime and Camera. You can also reinstall it from the App Store.
Can I FaceTime someone with an Android phone?
Yes, with a link. In the FaceTime app tap Create Link and share it. They can join from a web browser, but they cannot start a FaceTime call themselves.
