App Store not working? Fix “Cannot Connect to App Store”

What does Cannot Connect to App Store mean?

The App Store has to reach Apple's servers, check who you are and confirm the time on your clock before it can show a single app. If any part of that fails, you see Cannot Connect, a blank white screen, a spinning wheel, or empty search results. The message does not say which part failed, so the best approach is to work from the outside in: Apple's servers, then your connection, then your clock, then your account and finally the phone itself.

Step 1: Is Apple having an outage?

Open apple.com/support/systemstatus on another device. If App Store, Apple Account or iCloud shows a yellow or red marker, the problem is on Apple's side. Nothing on your phone will fix it, so wait and try again later. Outages are rare and usually clear within a few hours. If everything is green, move on.

Step 2: Is your connection really working?

A website that loads does not prove the App Store will. Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data, or the other way around, and try again. Restart your router if you are on Wi-Fi, then check Settings › Wi-Fi and tap the blue i next to the network. Public and hotel Wi-Fi often block app downloads until you accept a login page. Step 3: Are the clock, VPN and DNS right?

If the date and time are wrong, secure connections fail. Set it in Settings › General › Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. A VPN or a content blocker can also block Apple's servers, so turn it off in Settings › VPN for a test. If you changed the DNS on your router or phone to a custom address, switch back to automatic. After each change, close the App Store from the app switcher and open it again.

Step 4: Are Screen Time or parental controls blocking it?

If the App Store icon is missing, or you cannot install or update apps, Screen Time may be restricting it. Go to Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › iTunes & App Store Purchases and set Installing Apps and In-app Purchases to Allow. On a child's iPhone, the Family organizer may need to approve the change. Also check that Screen Time Downtime is not active.

Step 5: Is there an Apple Account or payment problem?

Sign out of the App Store from Settings › [your name] › Media & Purchases › Sign Out, then sign in again. If the screen says your account needs verification, follow the on-screen steps and see the guide to Verification Required messages. An unpaid balance or an expired card can also block downloads, so check Payment & Shipping in your account settings. If you forgot the password, it can be reset from your Apple Account page.

What if only part of the App Store fails?

Sometimes the App Store opens but one tab is empty. If Today loads but Search shows nothing, or Updates stays blank, the connection is probably weak or a stale view is stuck. Force close the app by swiping up from the bottom and holding, then swipe the App Store away and open it again. Try the same search on cellular data. If Updates is blank only, pull down on the screen to refresh it. A page that never loads on Wi-Fi but works on cellular points to your router or provider, not the iPhone.

Do region or Family Sharing settings matter?

Your Apple Account has a country or region setting that decides which apps and prices you see. If you recently moved, an old region can cause errors. Check it in Settings › [your name] › Media & Purchases › View Account › Country/Region. Changing it needs a payment method in the new region and a zero balance, so do it carefully. If you share purchases through Family Sharing, a problem with the family organizer's payment method can block downloads for everyone, so ask them to check their payment settings.

Do beta software and older iPhones cause it?

An iOS beta can make the App Store behave oddly, since Apple's servers expect release versions. If you installed a beta, consider returning to the public release. Very old iPhones that cannot run current iOS may also fail to load newer App Store pages. In that case, the App Store can still offer older versions of apps that you bought before, but the store itself may be slow. If your phone is several years old and also struggles with storage, battery and speed, a battery replacement may be worth a quote, and so may a trade-in toward a newer phone.

Is your router or provider the problem?

If every other device on your Wi-Fi loads Apple pages normally, the router is probably fine. If none do, restart the router and modem, wait two minutes and test again. Some internet providers, schools and offices block or filter Apple services, so try a phone hotspot from another phone as a test. If the App Store works over the hotspot, the first network is blocking it, and you may need to talk to whoever manages it.

iPad, Mac and Apple TV differences

• iPad: the steps are the same as iPhone, including Settings › General › Date & Time.
• Mac: open System Settings › Network, check the date and time and sign out and back in from the App Store menu. If it still fails, restart in Safe Mode.
• Apple TV: restart it from Settings › System, check the network and sign in again.

What signs point to a bigger problem?

If the App Store fails together with iCloud, Messages and Safari, the cause is probably your network or your Apple Account, not the App Store itself. If only the App Store fails after an iOS update, install the newest update, since Apple often repairs it within days. If your iPhone is slow, hot or drains fast at the same time, the cause may be a failing battery or full storage, so check Settings › Battery › Battery Health and iPhone Storage. What are the last resorts, and when should you get help?

Restart the iPhone and install the latest iOS in Settings › General › Software Update. If the App Store still will not load, reset network settings under Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. This forgets Wi-Fi passwords and VPN settings, but keeps your photos and apps. If it still fails on every network, back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer and contact Apple Support, since a restore may be needed. A full phone can also trip things up, so check Settings › General › iPhone Storage and make room on your iPhone if it is nearly full.

Check the date and time

A wrong date or time can break the secure connection the App Store needs. Go to Settings › General › Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Then close and reopen the App Store.
