iPhone Mail says 1 unsent message: how to send it or get rid of it

A stuck 1 unsent message notice means an email is waiting in your Outbox. Open it, check the address, and send or delete it. If it keeps coming back, the outgoing server or account setup is usually the cause.

A small line at the bottom of the Mail screen says 1 Unsent Message. You did not knowingly leave an email half sent, and tapping the line does not seem to clear it. The notice can sit there for days and sometimes comes back after you delete it. The good news is that this is a simple queue problem. Mail keeps an email in the Outbox when it cannot be delivered, and the notice shows until that email either goes out or is deleted. This guide shows how to find it, how to send or remove it, and what to check when it returns.

What does 1 unsent message mean in Mail?

When you tap Send, Mail hands your message to the outgoing mail server of your account. If the connection fails or the server refuses the message, Mail does not throw it away. It moves the message to the Outbox and shows the unsent message count. Apple’s support page puts it clearly: if you get a message that says your email was not sent, it goes to your Outbox, and if you do not see an Outbox, your email was sent. So the notice always points to one specific email waiting for you.

Why is my iPhone email stuck in the Outbox?

  • No connection at the moment you sent it: a weak Wi-Fi network, a tunnel, or Airplane Mode can fail the send.
  • A wrong or misspelled address: the server rejects a message to an address that cannot exist.
  • A very large attachment: many providers refuse large messages, and the email never leaves.
  • A password or security change: if you changed your password, turned on two-step verification, or your provider asked for a new sign-in, the outgoing server can refuse the message.
  • An outgoing server problem: a wrong server name, port, or a provider outage.
  • A glitch: the message was sent but the counter did not update, which a restart can clear.

How do you send or delete the stuck email?

Open the Outbox

  1. 1

Open Mail and tap Mailboxes at the top left.

If you are inside a mailbox, tap the back arrow until you see the list of mailboxes.

  2. 2

    Tap Outbox.

If there is no Outbox, the email was sent. The notice may just need a restart to disappear.

  3. 3

Tap the email in the Outbox.

Check the recipient, the subject and the attachment.

  4. 4

Fix anything that looks wrong, then tap Send.

If it goes through, the notice disappears.

  5. 5

To remove it instead, swipe left on the email and tap Delete.

You can also open it and tap Cancel to save it as a draft.

What if the Outbox buttons do not work?

Some people report that the message cannot be deleted while the iPhone is online, because Mail keeps trying to send it. The workaround users describe on Apple’s forums uses Airplane Mode. It is not an official Apple fix, but it is harmless to try.

Airplane Mode method

  1. 1

Turn on Airplane Mode in Control Center.

Wi-Fi and cellular go off, so Mail stops retrying.

  2. 2

Open Mail and go to the Outbox.

You may now see the stuck email.

  3. 3

Swipe left on it and tap Delete.

Or edit it and move it to Drafts.

  4. 4

Turn Airplane Mode off and wait a minute.

    The counter should read zero.

If the message does not show in the Outbox but the notice remains, close Mail from the App Switcher and restart the iPhone. A one-time glitch is common.

How do you check the account that keeps failing?

If you delete the stuck email and the notice returns the next time you send, the account itself has a problem. Apple’s steps start with the basics:

  1. Make sure the iPhone has internet access, and check your email provider’s status page for an outage.
  2. Sign in to your provider’s website from a browser. If your password does not work there, Mail will not work either.
  3. Ask your provider whether two-step verification is on. Apple says you might need a special password or authorization from your provider to send and receive on the device.
  4. Check your account settings with your provider or administrator.
  5. Remove and add the account again if nothing else works.

How do you check the outgoing server settings?

Open Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts, tap the account, and look at its outgoing mail server. On older iOS versions the path is Settings › Mail › Accounts. A forum user fixed a stuck message by removing a leftover secondary outgoing server that came from a typo. The server name, port and sign-in must match what your provider publishes. If you do not know them, search your provider’s support site for iPhone settings. Do not guess, because a wrong port can keep an email in the Outbox forever.

How do you re-add the account safely?

Remove and add the account

  1. 1

    Save your mail first.

Sign in to your provider’s website on a computer and make sure the mail is stored there. Apple warns that deleting an account can remove mail that was downloaded to the iPhone.

  2. 2

Open Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts and tap the account.

  3. 3

    Tap Delete Account and confirm.

  4. 4

Restart the iPhone, then add the account again.

Choose your provider and sign in. Use an app password if your provider needs one.

  5. 5

Send a short test email to yourself.

Check that the Outbox stays empty.

If Gmail is the account that fails, see Gmail not working on iPhone, because Google often asks for a new sign-in. If you stopped receiving mail too, read about Mail not updating on iPhone.

Could a full storage or bad network be the reason?

Sometimes. If an iCloud email account will not send, check the iCloud storage under Settings › your name › iCloud. A mailbox that is full can refuse mail, and our guide to an iCloud storage that is full shows how to clear space. A flaky network can also fail large sends. Move to a stronger Wi-Fi network, or read why an iPhone is not connecting to Wi-Fi if the problem is wider.

How do you avoid unsent messages in the future?

What if the message is stuck in Drafts or Sent instead?

Sometimes the problem is not in the Outbox. A message you started but did not finish stays in Drafts, and Mail does not show an unsent notice for it. A message that went out but shows an error stays in Sent with a warning. If you cannot find the email, search for a word from the subject in Mail’s search field, and check the All Mail or Archive folders of the account. Look at each account separately, because Mail keeps a separate sending queue for each one and shows them together in one combined view.

Why does the notice return after you delete the email?

A notice that comes back after you delete the stuck email usually means another message has failed, often an automatic one such as a reply from a rule, a message to a distribution list, or a message from another app that sends through Mail. It can also mean the account has a settings problem that blocks every send. Send a short plain email to yourself with no attachment. If that fails, the account’s outgoing server is the cause, not any one message. If it works, the original message had a bad address or an attachment that was too large.

What about emails sent from other apps?

Other apps can hand a message to Mail, such as the Share button in Photos or Files. If the share sheet says it sent the message but Mail shows an unsent notice, the attachment may have been too large for the account. Compress the photos, share a link from iCloud or another cloud service, or send the file in smaller batches. The same advice applies to a large PDF.

  • Wait for the whoosh sound and the message to appear in Sent before you close Mail.
  • Keep attachments small, or share a link to a large file instead.
  • Check the recipient’s address before you tap Send.
  • Update your password in Mail right after you change it on the provider’s site.
  • Use the Undo Send button briefly after sending if you spot a mistake.
