How to see deleted messages on Messenger (what really works)
Many missing chats are only archived. Truly deleted ones are gone from your side, but a few places may still hold a copy.

Check Archived chats

Open Messenger and tap the menu.

Tap Archive.

Open the chat and send a message to move it back.

Open Accounts Center › Your information and permissions.

Choose Download your information and select Messages.

Wait for the file, then open the messages folder.

Open Settings › Notifications › Notification history.

Turn it on if it is off. It only saves future notifications.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see a message someone unsent?
Not in Messenger. If your notification showed it first, Android notification history or the iPhone lock screen may still hold the preview.
If I delete a chat, does the other person lose it too?
No. Delete for you only removes your copy. Ask them to screenshot or forward it.
