Why does Snapchat stop working?

Snapchat is heavy on the camera, the network and background tasks, so it breaks in more ways than a simple app. The usual causes are an outage on Snapchat's side, a weak or filtered connection, an old app version, a full cache, missing permissions and a phone that is low on storage or memory. Less often, your account is locked or limited, which looks like an app problem but is not. Working out which type you have saves time.

Match the symptom to the fix

• The app opens and closes right away: update the app, restart the phone, then clear the cache or reinstall.
• Black or blank camera: turn on Camera permission, close other camera apps and restart.
• Snaps will not send or load: check the connection, and see Snaps stuck on sending.
• Keeps signing you out: see Snapchat logging you out.
• Cannot log in or says the login failed: check your password, and wait if you tried too many times.
• Filters and lenses missing: update the app, allow location and check your connection.

Fix it on iPhone

• Update Snapchat in the App Store and iOS in Settings › General › Software Update.
• Go to Settings › Apps › Snapchat and confirm that Camera, Microphone, Photos and Cellular Data are on. Older iOS versions use Settings › Snapchat.
• Turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode, since both can slow loading.
• Turn on Background App Refresh for Snapchat so Snaps arrive in time.
• Offload the app in Settings › General › iPhone Storage › Snapchat, then reinstall.

Fix it on Android

• Open Settings › Apps › Snapchat › Permissions and allow Camera, Microphone, Photos and music, and Location if you use maps and lenses.
• Go to Settings › Apps › Snapchat › Storage and tap Clear cache. Avoid Clear data unless you are ready to log in again.
• Set battery use for Snapchat to Unrestricted, so the system does not close it.
• Update Snapchat and Android System WebView in Google Play.

Camera, filters and lenses that will not load

Lenses use the camera and sometimes your location, and they need a stable connection to download. Make sure you allow the permissions above, switch from cellular data to Wi-Fi and try again. Close other apps that use the camera, such as video calls or a flashlight app. If the camera shows a black screen only in Snapchat, restart the phone. If it fails in every app, the problem is the camera hardware, and a phone camera that is not working has the checks to run.

Account locked or temporarily limited

If Snapchat says your account is locked, suspended or temporarily disabled, the app is fine and the account is the issue. The usual reasons are too many failed log in attempts, a suspicious login or breaking the community rules. Wait 24 hours before you try again. Do not try many times in a row. Use Snapchat's support form to appeal a lock. Unofficial apps and plug-ins are a common cause of locks, so remove them. If you suspect someone else got into your account, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication under Settings.

Slow Snapchat on an old or full phone

A phone that is nearly out of storage or memory struggles with Snapchat, since it keeps a lot of cached video. If Snapchat is the biggest app on your phone, clearing the cache often frees several hundred megabytes. Clear it every few months. Is Snapchat down?

Check Downdetector and the Snapchat Support account on X. If reports spike, wait. Outages usually last from a few minutes to a couple of hours. While you wait, avoid deleting the app, because that does not help and can lose unsent drafts.

Quick checks before you try anything big

• Open another app that uses the internet. If it does not load either, fix the connection first.
• Check the date and time. Turn on Set Automatically in your phone settings.
• Look at your phone's storage. If it is nearly full, free space before anything else.
• Make sure you are not on a school, work or public network that blocks social apps.

How to clear the Snapchat cache properly

In Snapchat, tap your profile picture, then the gear icon. Scroll to Account Actions and tap Clear Cache, or look under Privacy Controls on some versions. Snapchat offers to clear things such as Memories data cached on the phone, Lens data and Chat media. You can clear all, or pick the ones that use the most space. Your account stays signed in, and your Memories stay safe in your account. After you clear it, the app may need a minute to download lenses again, so wait before you judge whether it worked.

Fix problems with notifications and Snaps that arrive late

If you do not hear about new Snaps until you open the app, check the notification settings. On iPhone go to Settings › Notifications › Snapchat and allow notifications. On Android, go to Settings › Apps › Snapchat › Notifications. Also check that Focus, Do Not Disturb and battery saver are not holding messages back. When to contact Snapchat Support

Open Snapchat and go to Settings › Support to search the help pages or send a report. Include your phone model, your app version and what you already tried. If you cannot open the app at all, use support.snapchat.com in a browser. Be careful with anyone who contacts you offering to fix or restore your account for money. That is a scam.

Check for a Snapchat update that fixes a known bug

When many users report the same problem, Snapchat usually ships a fix within days. Open the app store, search for Snapchat and read the What's New notes. If you see words such as bug fixes or performance, install it. If the update is not available yet in your region, it often rolls out in stages, so check again the next day. Avoid downloading Snapchat from sites outside the official stores, since fake versions can steal your login.

If Snapchat works again, keep the app updated and clear its cache every few months. That prevents most repeat problems.
