How to hide following on Instagram (what really works)

Who can see your following list?

On a public account, anyone on Instagram can tap Following on your profile and scroll through every account you follow. On a private account, only people you approved as followers can see it. Your follower and following counts are always visible to everyone, even on a private account, but the names in the lists are hidden from non-followers.

There is one more place people learn who you follow: when someone opens another person's profile, Instagram may show "Followed by" and a few names. If you follow that person, your name can appear there to mutual followers. Going private does not change this for people who already follow you.

What changes when you go private

• New followers must send a request that you approve.
• Your posts, Reels and Stories only show to followers.
• Your followers and following lists are hidden from people who do not follow you.
• Existing followers keep access unless you remove them.
• Posts you shared to public hashtags or locations no longer appear there for non-followers.

If you run a creator or business account, you must switch back to a personal account before you can go private. Go to Settings and activity › Account type and tools › Switch to personal account. You lose access to Insights while personal.

Remove a follower so they cannot see the list

1. Open your profile and tap Followers.
2. Search for the person.
3. Tap Remove next to their name and confirm.

On a private account, that person can no longer see your lists or posts unless they request to follow again and you approve. On a public account, removing them does nothing for privacy, because anyone can still see your lists.

Block or restrict instead

Blocking hides your whole profile from that person. They cannot find your account, see your lists or message you. Instagram does not tell them, but they may notice. Restrict is softer: the person can still see your public posts and lists, but their comments on your posts need your approval and their messages go to Message Requests. Restrict is useful for someone you do not want to upset, but it does not hide who you follow.

Hide other things people see

• Activity status: Settings and activity › Messages and story replies › Show activity status. Turn it off to hide when you were last online.
• Like counts: Settings and activity › Likes and shares › Hide like and share counts.
• Story viewers: Settings and activity › Hide story and live, then pick people.
• Close Friends: share Stories with a small list only.
• Suggested accounts: Settings and activity › Account privacy, then turn off Show account suggestions on profiles so you do not appear in others' suggestions.

Do apps that hide your following list work?

No. Third-party apps that promise to hide your following list, show who viewed your profile or reveal private accounts do not work, because Instagram does not allow any app to change those things. Many of these apps ask for your Instagram password and then use your account to send spam or sell followers. Instagram may lock accounts that log in through them. Stick to the settings inside Instagram. If you already gave your password to one, change it now and set up two-factor authentication.

Hide your following list on a private account step by step

1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
2. Tap the three lines at the top right.
3. Tap Account privacy.
4. Turn on Private account and confirm.
5. Go back to your profile, tap Followers and remove anyone you do not want to see your lists.

Menu names shift slightly between updates. If you do not see Account privacy, search for "privacy" in the search bar at the top of Settings and activity.

Unfollow quietly

If the real goal is to stop people seeing that you follow a certain account, you can simply unfollow it. Instagram does not notify anyone when you unfollow. You can also mute an account instead, which hides its posts from your feed while you keep following it. Muting does not hide the follow from others.

A quick privacy checklist

• Private account on.
• Followers list reviewed and cleaned.
• Activity status off if you prefer.
• Two-factor authentication on.
• No third-party follower apps connected (Settings and activity › Website permissions › Apps and websites).

Can people see what you like and comment on?

Instagram removed the old Following activity tab years ago, so people can no longer scroll a feed of what you liked. But your likes and comments still appear on the posts themselves. Anyone who views a public post can tap the likes and may see your name, and your comments are visible to everyone who can see the post. Going private does not hide your likes or comments on other people's public posts.

Hide following on Threads and Facebook

Threads uses your Instagram follows as a starting point, and a public Threads profile can show your followers. Set Threads to private in its own Privacy settings. On Facebook, you can limit who sees your friends list and the people you follow in Settings & privacy › Settings › Audience and visibility › How people find and contact you, which is one of the few places where you can hide the list without going fully private. Teen accounts

Instagram sets accounts for users under 18 to private by default in the US, and parents using Supervision can see who their teen follows. A supervised teen cannot hide the following list from the supervising parent. For broader controls, see setting up an iPhone for a child.

Bottom line

You cannot hide only your following list. Go private, then remove, restrict or block the people you do not want looking. That is the only reliable way, and it keeps your account safe from apps that promise more than Instagram allows.

Will followers be notified if I go private?

No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you switch to a private account. Your existing followers keep seeing your posts and lists as before. People who do not follow you will see a message that says This account is private when they visit your profile, along with your post, follower and following counts.

Pending follow requests appear in your notifications. Review them carefully, since approving a request gives that person access to your lists right away.

Can I hide my followers list instead?

The same rule applies to followers. On a public account, anyone can see who follows you. On a private account, only approved followers can. Instagram does not offer a way to hide one list and show the other, so going private hides both together. Your counts stay visible either way, which is how Instagram shows that an account is real and active.

Instagram changes its settings menus several times a year, so if a menu name in this guide looks different on your phone, use the search bar at the top of Settings and activity and type the setting name. The options themselves have stayed the same for a long time.

Making the account private

The surest way to hide who you follow from strangers is a private account. Your Following list is then visible only to approved followers. Turn it on in Settings and privacy › Account privacy.
