iPhone contacts missing? How to get them back

Contacts rarely vanish for good. They are usually hidden by a filter, stored in an account that stopped syncing, or deleted and still recoverable from iCloud.

Missing contacts are stressful, but the contacts are usually still there. They are often stored in an account the phone is not showing, or an account that stopped syncing. Start with the checks that take a minute, and only try restore options after you have confirmed the contacts are really gone.

Where do your contacts actually live?

An iPhone can keep contacts in more than one place: iCloud, Gmail, Outlook or Exchange, and On My iPhone. The Contacts app shows the ones from the accounts that are switched on. When an account is hidden or signed out, its contacts disappear from view even though they still exist on the server. Knowing which account held your contacts makes every fix faster.

The fix

Fix 1: Show all contacts and check your lists

  1. 1

Open the Contacts app, or the Contacts tab in Phone.

  2. 2

Tap Lists in the top left, or Groups on older iOS versions.

On iOS 18 and later it is called Lists.

  3. 3

Choose All Contacts, or switch on every account in the list.

If the list shows only one account, the others are hidden. Tap Done after you pick them.

Fix 2: Search before you panic

Type a name in the search bar at the top of Contacts. If the person appears, the contact exists and was only buried or sorted differently. Also check whether the contact is saved with only a company name or an email address. Contacts without a name can sort to the bottom of the list under the # symbol.

Fix 3: Turn on Contacts in iCloud

Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. Tap Show All if you do not see Contacts, then make sure Contacts is on. If it was off, turning it on can bring your contacts back, because iCloud holds the copy. If your iPhone keeps signing you out, fix that first. See iCloud that keeps signing you out.

Fix 4: Check Gmail, Outlook and other accounts

  1. 1

Open Settings › Apps › Contacts › Contacts Accounts.

  2. 2

Tap the account and make sure Contacts is switched on.

For Gmail, the account must be signed in and the Contacts switch must be green.

  3. 3

If the account says it needs your password, sign in again.

A changed password stops contacts from syncing without any warning.

Fix 5: Check the default account

In Settings › Apps › Contacts, look at Default Account. New contacts go there. If it was changed to an account you do not use, newly saved contacts may be sitting in a place that your Contacts view does not show. Set it back to iCloud, or to the account you actually use, and then check Lists again.

Fix 6: Restore deleted contacts from iCloud.com

  1. 1

On a computer, go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple Account.

  2. 2

Open Account Settings, or your name, and scroll to Data Recovery.

The exact place varies as Apple updates the page.

  3. 3

Choose Restore Contacts and pick the date before the contacts went missing.

iCloud archives your current contacts first, so you can undo the restore if you pick the wrong date.

Fix 7: Restore from a backup

If contacts were not synced with iCloud or Gmail, an iPhone backup may hold them. A backup restore replaces everything on the phone with the data from that backup, so save any new photos and messages first. Our guide to restoring an iPhone from a backup explains the choices and what gets replaced. If your backup is old, you may lose recent changes.

Why contacts disappear after an update or a switch

After an iOS update, a change of Apple Account or a move to a new phone, the Contacts app can start showing a different set of accounts. If you moved from Android, your contacts may be in Google and not in iCloud. Add your Google account in Settings › Apps › Contacts › Contacts Accounts and they will return. When you set up a new iPhone, read our steps for moving to a new iPhone so contacts come across.

Check that iCloud has room and is up to date

Contacts need very little space, but an iCloud account that is full or has stopped syncing can still stop new changes from saving. Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, and look at the storage bar. If an error banner asks you to sign in again, do that first. After you fix it, wait a few minutes with Wi-Fi on while the iPhone catches up. You can also turn Contacts off in iCloud and on again, choosing Keep on My iPhone when asked, to force a fresh sync.

Contacts missing in one app only

Sometimes the contacts are fine, and only one app does not show them. In WhatsApp, Messages or Phone, open Settings › Privacy & Security › Contacts and make sure the app is allowed to see your contacts. In the Phone app, check the Contacts tab and the Favorites list separately, since a person can be missing from Favorites without being deleted. If a contact seems to be missing only when you search by number, try the name, the company or the email address.

Duplicates and merged contacts

Sometimes contacts are not gone, but merged. If two accounts both hold the same person, the iPhone may link them into one card and show only one entry. Open the contact and tap Edit to see the linked cards. If the problem is names that show as numbers, see contacts that show numbers instead of names.

Protect your contacts from now on

  • Keep Contacts turned on in iCloud so a copy is always online.
  • Back up the iPhone regularly. See backing up your iPhone for the steps.
  • Export a copy of your contacts as a vCard from iCloud.com now and then.
  • Keep one main account for contacts, so you always know where they live.

If you work through these steps and still find nothing, contact Apple Support. They can check whether your Apple Account has an archive of your contacts, and they can walk you through recovery options for your case.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my iPhone contacts disappear?

The most common causes are a hidden list or account, iCloud or Gmail Contacts turned off, signing out of your Apple Account, or deleting contacts by mistake. An update or a restore can also change which account is shown.

Can I recover deleted contacts on an iPhone?

Often yes. If you use iCloud Contacts, sign in at iCloud.com and use Data Recovery to restore contacts to an earlier version. You can also restore from an iPhone backup.

Will restoring contacts delete my current ones?

Restoring from iCloud.com replaces your current contacts with the archived version, but iCloud saves your current ones as a new archive first. A device backup restore replaces more than contacts, so check what it overwrites.

Why are contacts missing after switching to a new iPhone?

The contacts may not have been in iCloud or on the old phone’s backup. Check that Contacts was turned on in iCloud on the old iPhone, then see which accounts the new iPhone is showing.

What to try next

Why is my iPhone Mail not showing new emails?

The account may be set to Manual or Fetch, Background App Refresh may be off, or Low Power Mode may be pausing updates. A password change or a full iCloud mailbox also stops new mail.

Why does my new iPhone say no backups available?

Usually because you signed in with a different Apple Account than the one that made the backup, or the old phone never completed a backup. A weak Wi-Fi connection can also hide the list.

Can I transfer my iPhone backup from iCloud to Google Drive?

No. An iCloud device backup is stored in Apple's format and can only restore to an iPhone or iPad. You can move your photos, files, contacts and calendar to Google instead.

Can I restore from iCloud without erasing my iPhone?

No. Apple only offers the restore during setup. If the iPhone is already set up, erase it in Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone, then choose From iCloud Backup when you set it up again.
