Syncing with iCloud paused in Messages: why it shows and how to resume

The words Syncing with iCloud Paused at the top of Messages mean your texts have stopped syncing for now. Low power, a weak connection or a full iCloud account are the usual reasons, and each has a quick check.

You open Messages and a small gray line at the top says Syncing with iCloud Paused. Your conversations are all there, but you wonder whether new texts will reach your iPad or Mac, and whether anything is at risk. The line is a status message from Messages in iCloud, the feature that keeps your text history in step across your Apple devices. It does not mean something is broken or lost. It means syncing is on hold, and there is almost always a plain reason. This guide explains what each cause means and how to bring syncing back, in the order that fixes it most often.

What does syncing with iCloud paused mean?

Messages in iCloud stores your texts, pictures and attachments in your iCloud account, and every device that is signed in to the same Apple Account shows the same conversations. When the iPhone cannot upload or download changes, it shows that syncing is paused instead of failing quietly. The messages already on the phone stay available. What stops is the exchange of new activity: a text you send may not show up on your iPad right away, and a message you delete may not disappear from your Mac until syncing starts again.

Why does Messages say syncing with iCloud paused?

  • Low Power Mode: Apple says iCloud Photos pauses syncing when the iPhone is in Low Power Mode or low on power, and Messages follows the same power-saving rules in practice.
  • A low battery: when the battery is very low, background work is suspended.
  • A weak or limited connection: iCloud needs a steady internet connection. Low Data Mode and Wi-Fi with a login page can pause it.
  • Your iCloud storage is full: Apple notes that when storage is full, syncing pauses until you free space or upgrade. Messages and their attachments count toward iCloud storage.
  • A sign-in problem: a changed password, a signed-out account or a pending verification can pause syncing.
  • A temporary Apple outage: the service itself may have trouble.
  • A glitch after an update: a restart or a toggle clears it.

Apple does not publish a Messages-specific list. These causes come from Apple’s pages about iCloud Photos pauses, which use the same iCloud sync system, and from reports in Apple Community threads.

How do you resume syncing step by step?

The fix

Fix it in this order

  1. 1

Plug in the iPhone and turn off Low Power Mode.

Open Settings › Battery and switch off Low Power Mode. Charge past 20 percent.

  2. 2

    Join a strong Wi-Fi network.

Turn off Low Data Mode for your Wi-Fi under Settings › Wi-Fi › the network name, and turn off a VPN.

  3. 3

Wait a few minutes with Messages open.

Syncing often resumes by itself once power and network are fine.

  4. 4

    Check iCloud storage.

Open Settings › your name › iCloud and look at the storage bar. If it is full, see iCloud storage full for how to free space.

  5. 5

    Restart the iPhone.

Hold the side button and a volume button, shut it down, wait 30 seconds, and turn it on.

  6. 6

    Check Apple’s System Status page.

Search for Apple System Status and look at iCloud. If a service is down, wait and try later.

How do you check the Messages in iCloud switch?

Settings can differ by iOS version, so look at both paths.

On iOS 17.2 or later

  1. 1

Open Settings and tap your name.

  2. 2

Tap iCloud, then tap See All.

  3. 3

    Tap Messages in iCloud.

You see a switch labeled Use on this iPhone and a sync status.

  4. 4

Check that the switch is on.

If it is on, leave it alone and try the steps above again.

On iOS 16 to 17.1

  1. 1

Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.

  2. 2

Tap Show All, then tap Messages.

  3. 3

Check that Sync this iPhone is on.

Apple lists a few requirements for Messages in iCloud: two-factor authentication, iCloud Keychain, and each device signed in to the same Apple Account. If one of these is missing, syncing can pause or never start.

Should you turn Messages in iCloud off and on?

This is a last step, not a first one, and it carries some risk. If you turn the switch off, Messages stops syncing and the iPhone may offer to keep a copy of your messages on the device or remove them from iCloud. Make sure you have a good backup first, and read each choice before you tap. Apple says messages must be part of a backup to be restored later. If you are unsure, skip this step and contact Apple Support. Before you start, check that your last backup is recent, using the steps in our guide to restoring an iPhone from a backup.

What if iCloud Photos says syncing is paused too?

The same causes apply. Low Power Mode, a low battery, a weak network and full iCloud storage can pause every iCloud service at once. If Photos also shows a pause, fix the power and the network first, then read our guide to iCloud Photos not syncing. Apple says you can tap Sync Now next to the status message in Photos, and that you should not turn iCloud Photos off, because it restarts the process.

What about your iPad and Mac?

The pause message can appear on any device. Check that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account, has a connection, and has Messages in iCloud turned on. On a Mac, open Messages › Settings › iMessage and check that Enable Messages in iCloud is selected. If only one device pauses, the problem is that device. If all of them pause, look at your account and storage.

What if you run out of iCloud storage often?

Messages with photos and videos take a lot of space over the years. Review large conversations in Settings › General › iPhone Storage › Messages, delete large attachments you no longer need, and decide whether a larger plan is worth it. Our guide to iCloud storage plan sizes gives clear numbers for photos, backups and messages.

How long does the pause last?

If the cause is power or network, the pause ends by itself within minutes of plugging in and joining Wi-Fi. If the cause is a full account, it stays paused until you free space or upgrade the plan. If it lasts longer than a day with good power, a good network and free storage, move to the sign-in and restart steps, and then contact Apple Support. Do not delete conversations to make the pause go away unless you have checked that they are backed up.

Can you still send and receive texts while sync is paused?

Yes. Sending and receiving works separately from Messages in iCloud. Messages travel through iMessage or SMS, and the sync only copies your history between devices. If texts also fail to send, the cause is a different one, so read about iMessage not working. A green bubble means SMS, which does not use iCloud at all.

What if only one Apple device shows the pause?

Look at that device alone. Check its battery, its network, its iCloud sign-in under Settings and its Messages in iCloud switch. A device that was off for a long time, or one that has not been updated in a year, often needs a restart and a software update before it catches up. When the other devices are fine, you do not need to change anything on them.

Does it affect your backup?

It can matter. When Messages in iCloud is on, your messages live in iCloud, which is why a paused sync matters before you replace a phone. Before you move to a new iPhone, let the sync finish, check the status in Messages, and confirm that your backup is up to date. If a restore later shows the backup list empty, see why an iPhone can say no backups available.

Frequently asked questions

What does syncing with iCloud paused mean in Messages?

Your iPhone has temporarily stopped uploading and downloading Messages through iCloud. Messages already on the phone stay, but new ones may not appear on your other devices until syncing resumes.

Will I lose my texts if syncing is paused?

Not by itself. Pausing stops the sync for now and does not delete anything, but keep a backup before you change Messages in iCloud settings.

Why does my iPhone say syncing with iCloud paused when I have storage?

Low Power Mode, low battery, a weak Wi-Fi connection or a sign-in problem can pause syncing even when iCloud has free space.

How do I turn Messages in iCloud on or off?

On iOS 17.2 and later, go to Settings › your name › iCloud › See All › Messages in iCloud and use the Use on this iPhone switch. On iOS 16 to 17.1, tap Show All, then Messages, and use Sync this device.
