iPhone flashlight not working? Fixes for every cause
Most flashlight problems are not a broken LED. The camera app, a hot phone or a missing Control Center button causes more of them than hardware does.

You reach for the flashlight in a dark parking lot, and nothing happens. Or the button is greyed out, missing from the lock screen or only gives you a weak glow. These problems feel like a hardware failure, but they usually are not. On most iPhones the flashlight is the same LED as the camera flash, and the software can switch it off for several ordinary reasons.
This guide goes from the quickest and most common causes to the rare ones. Work through the steps in order, and use the camera flash test in the middle to learn whether you are dealing with a software bug or a broken part.
Why does the iPhone flashlight stop working?
- The camera is using the flash. The flashlight and the camera share one LED. If the Camera app, a scanner or a video call is open, the flashlight can turn off or grey out.
- The iPhone is hot. When the temperature climbs too high, iOS can switch off the flash and warn you that the phone needs to cool down.
- The control was removed. The button can disappear from Control Center or the lock screen after an update, a reset or a layout change.
- A software glitch. A stuck process or a bug in a new iOS version can leave the button tapping but doing nothing.
- Dirt, a case or a screen protector. Anything covering the LED makes the light look dim or dead.
- A failed LED or connector. A drop, water damage or age can break the part. This is the least common cause.
Quick fixes to try first
The fix
Do these four things in this order
- 1
Close the Camera app and any app that uses the flash.
Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle to open the app switcher, then swipe the Camera, FaceTime and any scanner app up and away. Try the flashlight again.
- 2
Let the iPhone cool down.
If the back feels warm, or you saw a temperature warning, take off the case, move out of the sun and wait ten to fifteen minutes. See why an iPhone gets hot if it keeps happening.
- 3
Restart the iPhone.
Hold the side button and either volume button, drag the slider to power off, wait thirty seconds and turn it back on. A restart clears the small glitches that cause most flashlight bugs.
- 4
Turn the flashlight on from a different place.
Try Control Center, the lock screen button and the Siri command "Hey Siri, turn on the flashlight". If one of them works, the flash is fine and the problem is only the button.
Flashlight missing from Control Center or the lock screen
If you cannot find the button at all, it was probably removed rather than broken. This happens after an update, a Reset All Settings or when someone else changes the layout. You can add it back in a minute.
Add the flashlight to Control Center
- 1
Swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge instead.
- 2
On iOS 18 and later, tap the plus button at the top left, then tap Add a Control.
Search for Flashlight and tap it. Drag it where you want it, then tap an empty area to finish.
- 3
On iOS 17 and earlier, open Settings › Control Center.
Find Flashlight under More Controls and tap the green plus next to it.
Put the flashlight back on the lock screen
- 1
Wake the iPhone and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID, but stay on the lock screen.
- 2
Touch and hold an empty area of the lock screen, then tap Customize and choose Lock Screen.
- 3
Tap the minus on the bottom left or right button, then tap the empty button and choose Flashlight.
Only iOS 18 and later let you swap the lock screen buttons. On older versions the flashlight is fixed in the bottom left corner.
Flashlight greyed out or turning itself off
A greyed out button is a lock, not a break. The Camera app and the flashlight cannot use the LED at the same time. Opening the Camera turns the flashlight off, and using flash in a photo does the same. Open Camera, switch to a mode that does not use the flash, close the app fully and try again.
Heat is the other common lock. The iPhone protects its battery and parts by cutting power to the flash when it is too warm. Cases that trap heat, wireless charging, gaming, a hot car and direct sun all trigger this. Cool the phone, then test. If the flashlight works only for a few seconds and then shuts off, check how the phone feels in your hand while you use it.
Flashlight is on but too dim
- 1
Press and hold the flashlight button in Control Center.
A brightness slider opens. Drag it to the top for full brightness. On some newer models you can also change the width of the beam.
- 2
Clean the lens area.
Wipe the camera plate and the flash with a soft dry cloth. A thin layer of pocket lint or grease dims the light.
- 3
Remove the case and screen protector film if it overlaps the LED.
A case with a small cutout, or a sticker on the back, can block part of the light.
- 4
Check the temperature.
A warm iPhone lowers the flashlight brightness on its own. Let it cool and test again.
The camera flash test: software or hardware?
This test tells you whether the LED itself works. Open the Camera app, tap the lightning bolt at the top or the flash icon, set it to On and take a photo in a dark room. You can also record a short video with the torch icon on.
- Camera flash works, flashlight button does not: the LED is fine. The problem is software, so go to the update and reset steps below.
- Neither the flash nor the flashlight works: the LED, its cable or the logic board may be damaged. Skip to the repair section.
- Both work but only for a moment: suspect heat or a failing connection. Watch the temperature and see the repair section.
Software fixes if the LED still works
The fix
Update, then reset settings
- 1
Update iOS.
Open Settings › General › Software Update and install anything waiting. Flashlight bugs after a release are often fixed in the next point update. Read what to do when problems start after an update if the bug began right after you installed one.
- 2
Force restart the iPhone.
Quickly press and release volume up, then volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. On an iPhone 7 or older the buttons are different.
- 3
Reset all settings.
Open Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings. This keeps your photos, apps and data but puts every setting, including Control Center, back to the default. You will need to set up Wi-Fi passwords and preferences again.
- 4
Back up and erase as a last software step.
If nothing else works and the camera flash works, make a backup of the iPhone and then follow the steps to erase the iPhone. Test the flashlight before you restore from the backup.
When the LED is broken: repair options
If the camera flash is dead as well, the part has likely failed. Common triggers are a hard drop, water damage and a flex cable that has come loose. The flash module sits with the rear camera, so the repair is not something to attempt at home.
- Check coverage first. A defect inside the one year limited warranty, or an AppleCare plan, can make the repair free or cheap. Use this warranty guide to look up your coverage by serial number.
- Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They will run diagnostics and quote the repair. Book a Genius Bar visit or use the Apple Support app.
- An independent repair shop. This can cost less, but ask about the warranty on the part and whether they use genuine parts.
- Weigh the cost. If the phone is old and the repair is a large share of its value, compare it with the price of a replacement. Our guide to AppleCare and whether it is worth it can help for your next phone.
Other ways to get light on an iPhone while you wait
- Use the Camera app's flash for a still photo or a video with the torch on. It is the same LED, so it only helps when the flashlight button is the problem.
- Turn on the Display brightness and a white screen. Open a blank white page, such as a note with no text, and raise the brightness to the top.
- Use a second device or a small keychain light until the repair is done.
- If you only need alerts, remember that the LED flash for alerts is in Settings › Accessibility › Audio & Visual. It uses the same LED and will not work if the LED is broken.
How to keep the flashlight working
- Avoid leaving the iPhone in a hot car or in direct sun, which is the most common reason for the flash to shut off.
- Keep the camera plate clean and use a case with a proper flash cutout.
- Install iOS updates when they come, and restart the iPhone once a week.
- Do not keep the flashlight on for long periods. It draws power and heats the phone.
- Keep the Flashlight control in Control Center and on the lock screen so it is one tap away.
Still no light? A short checklist
Run through this before you book a repair. The Camera app is closed. The phone is cool. You restarted it and updated iOS. You tried Control Center, the lock screen and Siri. The case is off and the lens is clean. You ran the camera flash test. If you can say yes to each of these and the flash is still dead, the part needs service. If the camera flash works and only the button fails, a Reset All Settings or an erase almost always fixes it. If the camera also gives you trouble, read our guide to fixing a camera that will not work.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my iPhone flashlight greyed out?
The flashlight greys out when the Camera app or another app is using the flash, or when the iPhone is too hot. Close the camera, let the phone cool down and try again.
Why is my iPhone flashlight not bright anymore?
The flashlight may be set to a low brightness level, the lens area may be dirty or covered by a case, or the iPhone may be dimming the light because it is hot. Press and hold the flashlight button to change the level.
How do I add the flashlight back to Control Center?
On iOS 18 and later, swipe down from the top right corner, tap the plus button at the top left and choose Add a Control, then pick Flashlight. On iOS 17 and earlier, use Settings › Control Center.
Can a software update fix a flashlight that will not turn on?
Sometimes. If the camera flash works but the flashlight button does not, the cause is usually software, and a restart or an iOS update often clears it. If the camera flash is dead too, it is a hardware fault.
