How to change your voicemail greeting on iPhone

You can record a custom greeting right in the Phone app. Where the option lives depends on which Phone app layout you use.

The fix

Record a new greeting

Open the Phone app.

Open the greeting screen.
Classic layout: tap Voicemail, then Greeting at the top left. Unified layout in iOS 26: open the menu at the top and choose the voicemail greeting option.

Tap Custom, then Record.

Say your greeting and tap Stop.

Tap Play to check it, then Save.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find the Greeting option?

Some carriers do not support changing the greeting in the Phone app. Call your voicemail by pressing and holding 1 on the keypad and follow the menu to record a greeting.

How do I go back to the default greeting?

Open the greeting screen and choose Default instead of Custom, then tap Save.
