iPhone red dot on Phone app? 6 ways to clear it
The red badge on the Phone app counts missed calls and new voicemails. When it will not clear, an unheard voicemail, a missed call in a hidden list or a carrier sync problem is usually behind it.

A red number on the green Phone icon is meant to tell you that someone called or left a message. When it sits there with nothing to show for it, it is annoying, and it can make you worry that you missed something. In most cases the badge is counting something you cannot see on the first screen. This guide walks through the places to look, then the settings that fix a badge that is truly stuck.
What does the red dot on the Phone app mean?
The badge on the Phone app adds up missed calls and new voicemails. A missed call is one you did not answer, including calls that rang while the phone was on silent or in a Focus. A new voicemail is one you have not played yet. Some phones also count calls that came from numbers sent straight to voicemail. The count goes down as you view the calls or play the messages. If it does not, the iPhone either thinks something is unread or it never received the update.
Why won’t the red badge on the Phone icon go away?
- An unplayed voicemail. It may be old, far down the list, or one that never finished downloading.
- A missed call you cannot see. It may be hidden under the Missed tab, or far down a long Recents list.
- A voicemail count stuck on the carrier side. The carrier tells the iPhone the number of new messages, and the number can fall out of sync.
- A temporary glitch. A badge that was not refreshed after an update, a signal change or a trip.
- A deleted message still counted. Deleted voicemails can sit in a folder until you clear them.
The fix
Fix 1: Check Recents and the Missed tab
- 1
Open the Phone app and tap Recents.
Scroll through the list. Missed calls show in red.
- 2
Tap the Missed tab at the top.
This filters the list to missed calls only. Scroll all the way to the bottom.
- 3
Open or clear what you find.
Tap a call to view it, or swipe left to delete. You can also tap Edit › Clear to empty the list.
The fix
Fix 2: Play or mark every voicemail as read
- 1
Open Phone › Voicemail.
Look for any message with a blue dot beside it. A blue dot means unplayed.
- 2
Tap each blue dot message and let it play, or mark it as read.
If you want to clear them all, tap Edit in the corner, select the messages, then tap Read.
- 3
Scroll to the bottom and open Deleted Messages.
Tap it, then tap Clear All. A deleted voicemail can keep the count alive until it is cleared.
If the Voicemail tab is empty, shows a loading spinner or says it is not available, the problem may be your voicemail setup rather than the badge. See our guide to voicemail that is not working on iPhone, or set it up again with the steps for voicemail setup on iPhone.
Fix 3: Call your own voicemail to refresh the count
Because the carrier sends the new-message count, calling your voicemail can reset it. Open Phone › Voicemail and tap Call Voicemail near the top, or hold the 1 key on the keypad. Listen to the greeting, enter your voicemail password if asked, and play or delete any messages. Hang up. The carrier then sends a fresh count, and the badge often clears within a minute. If there are no messages at all, the system tells you so, and that update usually removes the phantom number.
Fix 4: Restart the iPhone
A restart refreshes the Phone app and rechecks the voicemail count. Close the Phone app first by swiping up from the bottom and holding, then swiping the app away. Then restart: hold the side button and a volume button, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. A restart does not erase anything. Apple Community answers often start here.
Fix 5: Check settings that affect the badge
- Notifications: open Settings › Notifications › Phone and check that Badges is on or off the way you want it.
- Focus: a Focus can silence calls. Open Settings › Focus and see if one allows only certain callers, which can push missed calls into the list without a ring.
- Silence Unknown Callers: under Settings › Apps › Phone, this sends unknown callers to voicemail. Those show as missed calls or voicemails.
- Call Filtering and blocked contacts: check Settings › Apps › Phone › Blocked Contacts for a number you meant to block.
Menu names can differ by iOS version. On some versions the Phone settings sit directly under Settings › Phone instead of Settings › Apps. If the missed calls are spam, our guide to blocking spam calls on iPhone shows how to cut them off.
Fix 6: Turn the badge off, update or reset network settings
If the badge is stuck and nothing above clears it, you have three options in order of effort. First, turn off Badges for the Phone app in Settings › Notifications › Phone. The number disappears, but you will not see counts any more. Second, install the latest iOS under Settings › General › Software Update, because badge bugs are sometimes fixed in updates. Third, reset network settings under Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset Network Settings. That clears saved Wi-Fi networks and can refresh the voicemail connection, but you will need to rejoin Wi-Fi.
Red dot on other apps or icons
A red number on another app is a badge for that app’s own alerts, such as unread messages or updates. A red dot on the Settings icon usually means an Apple Account or software update needs attention. Open Settings and look at the top. A colored dot in the status bar at the top of the screen is something else. An orange dot means the microphone is in use, and a green one means the camera. Our guide to what the orange dot means explains those.
Missed calls from numbers you do not know
If the badge keeps growing with calls you do not recognize, they may be spam or scam attempts. Do not call back numbers you do not know, especially ones that show up once and hang up. You can block a number from Recents by tapping the info button and choosing Block this Caller. If you are not getting real calls at all, check our guide to an iPhone that is not receiving calls.
Still stuck? What to try next
- Ask your carrier to clear your voicemail box or reset your voicemail. Carriers like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile can do this from their side.
- Remove and reinsert the SIM card, or toggle Airplane Mode for ten seconds, then check again.
- Back up the iPhone and contact Apple Support if the badge returns after every restart.
- As a last step, erase the phone and set it up again. Do this only after a full backup.
Why the number does not match what you see
Two systems feed the badge. The iPhone counts missed calls on its own. The carrier counts new voicemails and sends that number to the phone. If the two disagree, you can see a 2 on the icon and only one item inside. The carrier count is the one that tends to stick, which is why calling voicemail, or asking the carrier to reset it, works when nothing on the phone does. Visual voicemail also keeps a short list of recently deleted messages, so the number can lag behind what you just did.
If you use more than one SIM or an eSIM
On a dual SIM iPhone, each line has its own voicemail and its own count. A badge from your second line can appear on the same Phone icon. In the Voicemail tab, look for a line switcher at the top, and check both lines. After a SIM swap or a move to a new iPhone, an old voicemail count from the previous phone can also linger until the carrier updates it, so give it a day and then call voicemail once to force the update.
Quick checklist
- You checked Recents and the Missed tab down to the bottom.
- You played or marked every voicemail and cleared Deleted Messages.
- You called voicemail once to refresh the count.
- You restarted the iPhone and updated iOS.
- You checked the Badges, Focus and Silence Unknown Callers settings.
Frequently asked questions
What does the red number on the iPhone Phone app mean?
It counts your missed calls and new voicemails. Opening the Missed tab and listening to or marking voicemails as read clears it.
Why does my Phone app show a red dot but I have no missed calls?
A voicemail you have not played, a voicemail that failed to sync, or a missed call far down the list is the usual cause. Restarting the phone also refreshes a stuck count.
Can I turn the red badge off on the Phone app?
Yes. Go to Settings › Notifications › Phone and turn off Badges. This hides the number but does not delete missed calls or voicemails.
Is a red dot on the Phone app a virus or a scam?
No. It is a normal badge. Do not call back unknown numbers you do not recognize, and see our scam guide if the missed calls look suspicious.
