How to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp (5 signs)

How WhatsApp blocking works

When someone blocks you on WhatsApp, the app does not send you any notice. Instead, it quietly stops passing your messages, calls and status views to that person. Your app still behaves as if things are normal, so you have to look for indirect signs. WhatsApp designed it this way on purpose, to protect the privacy of the person who blocked.

No single sign proves a block. Each one can also be caused by settings, a dead phone or a deleted account. What matters is a pattern: several signs at once, lasting more than a couple of days.

Sign 1: messages stay on one gray tick

One gray tick means the message left your phone. Two gray ticks mean it reached their phone. Two blue ticks mean it was read (if read receipts are on). If you are blocked, every message you send stays on one tick forever. But one tick also happens when their phone is off, has no internet, or they have not opened WhatsApp in a while. If your older messages to them went to two ticks and new ones stay at one for days, that is a stronger hint.

Sign 2: no last seen or online

A block hides last seen and online. But anyone can also hide these in Settings › Privacy › Last seen and online, and if you hide your own last seen, you cannot see anyone else's. Check that your own setting is not set to Nobody before you read anything into it.

Sign 3: the profile photo never changes

If you are blocked, you see an old photo or the default gray silhouette. Again, the photo can be hidden from non-contacts or from everyone in privacy settings. Ask a mutual friend whether they can see a current photo. If they can and you cannot, a block becomes more likely.

Sign 4: calls never ring

Voice and video calls to someone who blocked you show Calling but never change to Ringing, and they never connect. Calling also stays on Calling when the person is offline. Try a few times across a day or two. If calls ring for a mutual friend and never for you, that points to a block.

Sign 5: you cannot add them to a group

This is the most reliable test. Create a new group and try to add the person. If WhatsApp says Couldn't add [name] or that you are not authorized, they likely blocked you. Note that people can also limit who adds them to groups in Settings › Privacy › Groups, which can cause a similar message, so even this test is not perfect. If you do run this test, delete the empty group afterward.

Blocked vs deleted account vs new number

• Blocked: their account still exists. Mutual friends can message them normally.
• Deleted WhatsApp: the account no longer exists. Their name may show without a photo and the chat may say they are no longer on WhatsApp in some cases.
• Changed number: you may see a notice in the chat that they changed their number, if you are a contact and they used the Change number tool.

If mutual friends can still chat with them and see their status, they did not delete the account.

What a blocked person can still see

If you are blocked, you can still see the person's name in your contacts and your old chat history. They cannot see your status, last seen or new profile photo changes, and they will not receive your messages. In groups you both belong to, you can still see each other's messages, because blocking does not remove anyone from shared groups.

Settings that look like a block

• Last seen and online set to Nobody or My contacts.
• Profile photo set to Nobody or My contacts (and you are not saved in their contacts).
• Read receipts off, so ticks never turn blue.
• Groups privacy set so only contacts can add them.
• Their phone is broken, lost or out of data.

What to do if you think you are blocked

Respect it. Blocking is a clear sign the person does not want contact right now. Do not create new accounts, ask friends to pass messages or keep calling, since that can count as harassment. If it is a misunderstanding with a friend or family member, reach out once in another way, like a phone call or in person, and then give them space.

If you need to reach someone for a real reason, such as a shared bill or child care, keep it to one clear message through another channel. Email works well because it leaves a record.

Can you message someone who blocked you?

You can type and send, but nothing reaches them. WhatsApp keeps the message on one tick and never delivers it, even if they unblock you later. If you send money through WhatsApp Pay in regions where it exists, that also fails. Status replies and reactions do not reach them either. There is no hidden way around a block, and tools that promise one are scams.

If you blocked someone yourself and want to undo it, open the chat, tap their name and tap Unblock, or go to Settings › Privacy › Blocked contacts.

How long does a WhatsApp block last?

A block lasts until the other person removes it. There is no time limit and no automatic end. If they unblock you, new messages start delivering again and you may see their photo and last seen return, depending on their privacy settings. WhatsApp does not tell you when that happens either.

Respect the block

If the signs point to a block, give the person space. Creating new accounts or messaging through group chats to reach someone who blocked you can count as harassment and may get your own WhatsApp account banned. If you believe it was a mistake, a mutual friend can mention it, or you can wait to see if they reach out.

No single sign is proof on its own, so look at them together over a few days before you decide.
