How to change AirDrop name on iPhone: device name and contact card

You send a photo by AirDrop and a friend sees a name you do not like: an old nickname, your full name, or something like iPhone. People expect to find an AirDrop name setting, but there is none. The name that shows up comes from two other places on your phone, and which one a person sees depends on whether you are in their contacts. This guide shows both places, explains what each person sees, and covers what to do if the change does not appear. Menu names can differ slightly between iOS versions.

Why is there no AirDrop name setting?

AirDrop does not keep its own name. It uses information your iPhone already has. When someone nearby looks for AirDrop devices, your phone shows either your device name or your contact card, depending on your AirDrop receiving setting and on whether the other person has you saved. That is why guides disagree: some tell you to rename the iPhone and others tell you to edit your contact card. Both are right for different people.

What name do other people see in AirDrop?

• People who have you in their contacts: they usually see the name and photo from your contact card, as long as their copy of your card matches your Apple Account details.
• People who do not have you saved: they see your iPhone name, such as Sam’s iPhone.
• Everyone mode: when you set AirDrop to Everyone for 10 Minutes, strangers see your device name.

Your contact card is linked to your Apple Account. If a friend has you saved under an old name, they may still see the old name until they update their own copy of your contact. You can ask them to edit it.

Why is my new AirDrop name not showing?

• The other person sees their saved contact: they may see the name they typed for you, not the one you changed.
• The phones have not refreshed: turn AirDrop off and on, restart both phones, and turn Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off and on.
• Different Apple Account details: a Contacts Only match needs the right phone number or email on both sides.

How do you change your AirDrop name on a Mac or iPad?

On an iPad, use the same path as on the iPhone: Settings › General › About › Name. On a Mac, open System Settings › General › About and change the Name field. Your Mac’s contact card is also in the Contacts app. After you rename a device, other nearby devices may need a moment before they show the new name.

How do you control who can see your device in AirDrop?

Open Settings › General › AirDrop and choose Receiving Off, Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes. Contacts Only is the safest choice for everyday use. Should you use your real name?

A real name is easy for friends to recognize, but a nickname is better for privacy in public places. In a crowded train or a stadium, anyone who sees AirDrop devices can read your device name when you are visible to Everyone. Use a short name that identifies the phone to you without giving away more than you want. You can still keep your full name on your contact card for people who know you.

What if the name will not change?

Restart the iPhone and try again. Check Settings › General › VPN & Device Management in case a work profile locks the name. Make sure iOS is up to date. If your contact card name will not save, check that you are signed in to iCloud, and see contacts showing as numbers on iPhone if contacts look wrong.

Is it safe to leave AirDrop on?

Yes, if you keep it on Contacts Only. That setting means only people in your contacts can see your device. If you get unwanted images from strangers in a public place, set AirDrop to Receiving Off and do not accept requests from people you do not know.

Open Contacts, tap My Card and then Edit. You can set a contact photo, and on recent versions of iOS also a Contact Poster, which is the full screen image that shows when you call. What is NameDrop, and is it the same thing?

NameDrop is a newer feature on recent iPhones that lets two people share contact details by holding their phones close together. It uses the same contact card you edit in My Card. It is not an AirDrop name setting, but keeping your card up to date means both features show the right information. You choose what to share each time you use it.

Can you rename AirDrop on an Apple Watch or AirPods?

No. AirDrop works between iPhones, iPads and Macs. An Apple Watch and AirPods have names of their own, but they do not appear in AirDrop. Rename those in their own settings if you want to tell them apart.

Do other apps use the same name?

The iPhone name also shows in Bluetooth lists and in your Personal Hotspot name, so changing it changes those too. The contact card name is used in Messages, Mail and FaceTime. Pick names you are happy to see in all of those places.
