iPhone back tap not working? 8 fixes for double and triple tap
Back Tap needs an action set for each tap, an iPhone 8 or newer and a clean tap. Eight fixes in order, from the setting to the case to a reset, and how to know if it is hardware.

Back Tap is one of those features you stop noticing until it quits. You double tap the back of the phone to take a screenshot, and nothing happens. Or you set up a triple tap to turn on the flashlight and the phone does not react. It is a small gap, but you lose a shortcut you used every day. Most of the time the cause is a setting, a case or the way you tap. Less often an update has broken it, or the phone does not support it at all. This guide goes through eight fixes in the order that finds the cause fastest, shows how to test properly, and explains what to do when it is hardware.
Why has back tap stopped working on my iPhone?
- No action is chosen. Apple's page says you pick an action for Double Tap or Triple Tap. If a gesture is set to None, nothing happens.
- Your iPhone is too old. Apple says Back Tap needs an iPhone 8 or later and iOS 14 or later.
- A case is muting the taps. The iPhone senses the taps with its motion sensors, and a thick case can dull them.
- The taps are too soft, too slow or in the wrong spot. The gesture needs a clear double or triple tap.
- A software glitch or a recent update. Apple Community has threads from people whose Back Tap stopped after an iOS update.
- The action itself is broken. A Shortcut you assigned may have been deleted or changed.
- The motion sensor has failed. This is rare, and the last cause to assume.
Fix 1: Check that an action is set
The fix
Choose an action for each tap
- 1
Open Settings and tap Accessibility.
- 2
Tap Touch.
Scroll to the bottom of the Touch screen. Back Tap is the last item.
- 3
Tap Back Tap.
- 4
Tap Double Tap and choose an action.
Apple lists Control Center, Screenshot and Accessibility Shortcut actions such as AssistiveTouch, Siri Shortcuts, Magnifier, Reachability and VoiceOver.
- 5
Repeat for Triple Tap.
A check mark should appear next to the action you picked. If both gestures say None, that is your answer. Pick an action, go back to the Home Screen and try the tap. If you want the screenshot gesture, see how to take a screenshot on an iPhone for the other methods, which do not depend on Back Tap.
Fix 2: Make sure your iPhone supports it
According to Apple, Back Tap works on an iPhone 8 or later. Apple's page also asks for iOS 14 or later, and recommends the latest iOS. If Back Tap does not appear under Settings, Accessibility, Touch at all, you are on an older model or an old iOS version. Open Settings, tap General, tap About and check the Model Name. If you have an iPhone 7 or older, no fix will add it. A different shortcut, such as AssistiveTouch, can do a similar job.
Fix 3: Take the case off and test
Back Tap listens for taps with the iPhone's built-in sensors. Most cases let the taps through, but a thick, rigid or heavy case can absorb them. This is a very common reason for a gesture that works sometimes and fails at other times. Remove the case, then try the double tap again. If it works, you have found the cause. A thinner case or a different tap spot may fix it. If it still fails without the case, move on to the next fix.
Fix 4: Tap the right way
The iPhone needs two or three clear taps, fast enough to count as one gesture. Use two fingers or the pad of one finger, tap firmly on the back, and keep the rhythm even. Guides and Apple Community replies point to the middle of the back, near the camera area and the logo, as the most responsive. Sources disagree on the exact spot, so try a few places. Do not tap while the phone is lying on a table, because the surface will absorb the movement. Hold it in your hand. Also check that the screen is on and unlocked. If a feature needs you to be signed in, it will not run on a locked phone.
Fix 5: Turn Back Tap off and on, then restart
A simple reset of the feature can clear a stuck state. Go to Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap. Set Double Tap and Triple Tap to None. Then restart the iPhone by holding the side button and a volume button, and sliding to power off. When it starts, go back and choose your actions again. If a restart did not help, try a force restart: press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Fix 6: Check the action you picked
If you assigned a Shortcut, it may be the thing that fails, not Back Tap. Open the Shortcuts app and run the shortcut by hand. If it does not run, fix or rebuild it. For a quick test, set Double Tap to Screenshot or Control Center, which are built in. If the built-in action works and your shortcut does not, the problem is the shortcut. Also check that you have not set Back Tap to an Accessibility Shortcut that needs a feature you have turned off, such as VoiceOver or Magnifier.
Fix 7: Update iOS, or check whether an update broke it
Apple Community has threads from people whose Back Tap stopped right after an update, and a later update fixed it for some. Open Settings, tap General, tap Software Update and install the newest version. For the steps in full, see how to update an iPhone. If it broke right after a big upgrade, give the phone a day to finish its background work first. Our page on problems after an iPhone update lists other things that tend to act up at the same time.
Fix 8: Reset all settings, then contact Apple
If you have tried everything, reset all settings. It does not erase photos or apps, but it resets things like Wi-Fi networks and privacy choices, so use it last. Open Settings, tap General, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset and choose Reset All Settings. After the restart, set Back Tap up again. If it still does not respond with the case off, the built-in actions fail and a reset did not help, the motion sensors may be at fault. Apple's Back Tap article has no troubleshooting section, so the next step is Apple Support or an authorized service provider.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| Back Tap is not in Settings | iPhone older than the 8, or old iOS | Fix 2 |
| Both gestures say None | No action chosen | Fix 1 |
| Works sometimes, fails with the case on | Case absorbs the taps | Fix 3 |
| Works for Screenshot, not for my shortcut | The shortcut is broken | Fix 6 |
| Stopped after an update | Software glitch | Fix 7 and Fix 5 |
| Fails everywhere, even with built-in actions | Settings or hardware | Fix 8 |
Does back tap drain the battery?
Apple does not publish a battery cost for Back Tap, and we found no source that measures one. The feature uses sensors that the iPhone already runs for other things. If your battery drains faster than it used to, the cause is more likely something else. See our guide on why an iPhone battery drains fast.
Still not working?
Write down which iPhone and iOS version you have, which action you picked and what you tried. That saves time if you contact Apple. If the repair is not worth it, you can still take screenshots and open Control Center with other gestures. Set up AssistiveTouch, use the side and volume buttons, or use the Action button on newer models. If the phone is covered, check whether AppleCare is worth it before you pay for a repair.
Frequently asked questions
Why is back tap not working on my iPhone?
Back Tap only works if you picked an action for Double Tap or Triple Tap, and only on an iPhone 8 or later. Open Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap and choose an action for each gesture.
Does back tap work on iPhone 7?
No. Apple says Back Tap needs an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 14 or later, so older models do not offer it in Settings.
Does back tap work with a case on?
It works with most cases. A thick or rigid case can stop the iPhone from sensing the taps, so test with the case off before you assume a fault.
How do I reset back tap on iPhone?
Open Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap, set Double Tap and Triple Tap to None, restart the iPhone and pick your actions again.

Why does Siri not respond when my iPhone is face down?
By default, iPhone does not listen for “Siri” when it is face down or covered, to avoid accidental activations. Turn it face up, or change this in Accessibility › Siri with Always Listen for “Siri”.
