How to get a refund on Google Play: apps, in-app purchases and subscriptions

Google Play refunds work best if you ask fast. Here is where the button is, what the time limits mean and what to try when it is missing.

A game that crashes on your phone, an app that was not what the listing promised, a duplicate charge or a subscription that renewed by surprise: all are reasons people ask for a refund. Google Play can refund some of these, and the rules depend on what you bought and how long ago. The sooner you ask, the better your chances. This guide covers the steps, what to do if the refund button is missing, how in-app purchases and subscriptions differ and how to stop it happening again.

Find the order first

  1. 1

Check your Gmail for the receipt.

Google sends a receipt for every purchase to the email on your Google Account. It shows the order number, the date and the amount.

  2. 2

Or open the Play Store and look at your order history.

Tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & history. Orders are listed by date.

  3. 3

Make sure the order is on the right account.

If you have more than one Google Account on the phone, switch accounts at the top of the Play Store and look again.

How to request a refund from the Play Store app

The fix

Self-service refund

  1. 1

Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.

  2. 2

Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & history.

Menu names can change. If you do not see them, look for Order history or Purchase history.

  3. 3

Tap the order you want refunded.

  4. 4

Tap Request a refund and choose the closest reason.

Examples are Accidental purchase, Item not as described or Item doesn't work. Add a short note if you can.

  5. 5

Submit the request and watch your email.

Google often answers quickly. If approved, the refund goes to the original payment method, and the app or item may be removed.

Refunds on a computer

You can also request one from a browser. Go to play.google.com, click your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions and Budget & history, or open the Google Play help page for refunds. Sign in with the same Google Account that made the purchase and choose the order. The same Request a refund option appears if it is available for that order.

The time limits

Google has allowed quick self-service refunds for apps and games shortly after purchase, with a longer period if you ask through support, and different rules for in-app items, subscriptions, movies, books and hardware. The exact windows and rules have changed over the years, and they can differ by country and type. The safest approach is to request a refund right away, and to look at the order page, which shows the options that apply to your purchase. If the self-service button is gone, you are probably outside the window, and you need to ask a person.

If there is no Request a refund button

  1. 1

Open the Google Play help page for refunds.

Search for Google Play refund on support.google.com, and choose the option to ask for a refund or contact support.

  2. 2

Pick the order and describe the problem.

Explain what you bought, when, and why you want a refund. Keep it short and factual.

  3. 3

    Wait for the reply.

Google usually answers by email. Keep the case number.

  4. 4

Contact the developer if Google says no.

Use the developer contact on the app's Play Store page. For in-app purchases, many developers handle the refund themselves.

In-app purchases and subscriptions

  • In-app purchases: coins, gems and unlocks inside a game. Google can refund some, but you may be asked to contact the developer first. Consumed items are harder to refund.
  • Subscriptions: cancel in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions. A recent renewal can sometimes be refunded, but the cancellation does not refund the current period by itself.
  • Purchases outside the Play Store: if you paid on a developer's website, Google cannot refund it, so contact the company.

To stop a subscription from renewing, follow how to cancel subscriptions on Android. Do it before the next billing date.

Your child made a purchase

Ask for the refund as soon as you see the charge, and say that a child bought it without permission. Then add controls so it cannot happen again. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, go to Settings › Authentication and require authentication for every purchase. If your child has their own account, use Google Family Link to approve purchases. Short term, you can also pin the phone to one app so they cannot wander into the store, see how to lock an Android screen for kids.

Charge you do not recognize

Look in your Gmail for the receipt and check all accounts on your phone. A family member could have bought something, or a free trial could have turned into a paid plan. If you do not recognize it at all, change your Google password, review the devices signed in to your account and tell your bank. Watch out for emails that claim you bought something and ask you to call or click a link. Those are scams, and the real receipt never needs you to log in through an email link.

Play Store acting up while you try?

If the Play Store crashes or will not open the order page, clear its cache and update it, then try again. See what to do when the Google Play Store is not working. If an app is stuck on Pending and you were charged, check why a Play Store download is pending, because a failed download is a good reason to ask for a refund. On iPhone, the steps are different, see how to get a refund on the App Store.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to ask for a Google Play refund?

Google has allowed quick self-service refunds for apps and games within a short window after purchase, and a longer window if you ask through Google Play support. Ask as soon as you can, because the options shrink with time.

Can I get a refund for an in-app purchase?

Sometimes. In-app purchases follow Google's refund rules, but the developer often has a say, so ask Google first and contact the developer if the answer is no.

Does a refund cancel my subscription?

Not always. A refund and a cancellation are separate. Cancel the subscription in Google Play so you are not charged again.

Why is there no Request a refund button?

The order may be outside the self-service window, a type that needs support, or already refunded. Use the Google Play help page to ask a person.
