Android "No Command" Screen: What It Means and How to Get Out

A robot lying on its back with a red exclamation mark looks like a disaster. It usually is not. Here is the button combination that gets you out, and what to do if it loops.

You turn the phone on and see a small green Android robot lying on its back. There is a red triangle with an exclamation mark. Under it, two words: "No command." The phone does nothing else. It looks broken, and most people assume they have lost everything.

Take a breath. This screen is part of how Android's recovery mode works. You are one button press away from the menu that lets you restart. Below you will find the exact steps, what to do if the phone loops back to this screen, and when it is time to give up and reset.

What does the Android no command screen mean?

Recovery is a small separate system that lives next to Android on your phone. It is used to install updates and to wipe the phone. When a phone starts in recovery and no one has told it what to do, it shows the robot and the words "No command." It is a waiting screen. The recovery menu itself stays hidden until you press a button combination.

That is why the same screen appears on Pixel, Samsung, Motorola and many tablets. It is built into Android, so it is not tied to one brand.

Why did my phone land here?

  • You held the wrong buttons. Holding Power and a volume key while it restarts sends many phones into recovery. This is the most common cause.
  • An update stopped halfway. A system update runs through recovery. If the battery died or the install failed, the phone can wake up here.
  • A factory reset was started. Wipes run in recovery, and some phones show this screen before or after.
  • A stuck button. A swollen battery, a dirty case or a pressed button can hold a key down during startup.
  • Damaged system files. Less common. The phone cannot start Android, so it falls back to recovery.
  • A custom or unlocked setup. Phones that have been rooted or flashed can end up here after a bad change.

Fix 1: Wait one minute

Some phones sit on this screen for a short time and then continue on their own. A Samsung Members post says to wait 10 to 15 seconds and the device will enter recovery mode. Give it one full minute without touching it. If the robot is still there, move on.

Fix 2: Use the button combination to open the recovery menu

This is the step that works for most people. Google describes it on its Pixel help page for resetting a phone from Fastboot mode, and the sequence is the same for most phones.

On a Pixel

  1. 1

    Hold the Power button down.

  2. 2

While you hold Power, press Volume up once.

Press it and let go quickly, then release Power. Do not hold Volume up.

  3. 3

    The Android Recovery menu appears.

You will see a short list of options in white text on a dark background.

  4. 4

Press Volume down or up to move through the list.

The touch screen does not work in this menu.

  5. 5

Choose Reboot system now and press Power.

The phone restarts. If the fault was just a stray key press, Android starts normally.

On a Samsung Galaxy, community guidance says the same idea works: Power plus Volume up, held until the screen changes, then Reboot system now. Samsung does not publish this on a help page that I could find, and the timing varies by model. If your first try does nothing, try again with Power held a second longer before you tap Volume up.

Fix 3: Force a restart

If the combination does nothing, the phone may be frozen on the screen. Hold the Power button for 10 to 30 seconds until the screen goes black and the phone restarts. On many Samsung phones, hold Power and Volume down together. Let go as soon as the screen goes dark. A long hold with a volume key down can put you right back in recovery.

If the phone is already stuck on a logo after the restart, our guides to a Pixel stuck on the Google logo and a Samsung phone stuck on its logo cover that next stage.

Fix 4: Check for a stuck button

A button that is held down during startup can send the phone to recovery every time. Take off the case, look at the side keys and press each one a few times to free it. If the case squeezes the keys or the back looks like it is bulging, stop using the phone. A swollen battery can press on the frame and is a safety risk.

Fix 5: Let the battery charge, then try again

A low battery can interrupt an update and leave the phone in recovery. Plug it into a wall charger for at least 30 minutes. Do this before you start fixes that involve a restart. Use the original cable and a known good charger, not a car port or a laptop.

Fix 6: Try wiping the cache, if your menu has it

Some recovery menus, mostly on Samsung phones, include "Wipe cache partition." It clears temporary system files and does not delete photos, apps or messages. If your menu lists it, choose it, then choose Reboot system now. Pixel menus usually do not list this option, so skip this step if yours does not show it.

Fix 7: Factory reset as a last resort

If the phone returns to the No command screen every time, or Android will not start after Reboot system now, a factory reset may be the only way back. On a Pixel, Google lists these steps: in the recovery menu, scroll to Wipe data/factory reset, press Power, choose Factory data reset and finish with Reboot system now.

  • This erases the phone. Photos, messages, apps and settings that are not backed up are lost.
  • If you can reach Android at all, back up first. Our guide to backing up an Android phone takes about ten minutes.
  • After the reset, sign in with the same Google account. Most of your apps, contacts and photos in Google Photos come back.
  • Read the full steps. Our Android factory reset guide covers the reset from Settings and the extra security checks that follow.

When it is hardware, not software

If you have tried the combination on several attempts, tried a reset and the phone still returns to No command, the storage chip or the main board may be failing. Another sign: the phone also freezes, restarts by itself or gets very hot before this happened. At that point software cannot help.

  • Check the warranty first. Our guide to checking your phone warranty shows how.
  • Ask the maker or your carrier about a free repair or replacement if the phone is under a year old.
  • Get a quote from an authorized repair center. Compare it with the price of a replacement before you pay.
  • Do not flash firmware from a random website. A wrong file can lock the phone for good.

What not to do

  • Do not keep pressing buttons at random. Each wrong combination can send you back to recovery.
  • Do not pick Wipe data just because the menu is there.
  • Do not let the battery run flat while you try fixes. Charge it first.
  • Do not pay for "unlock" or "repair" software that promises to fix the screen from a computer. Most of these are not needed for this problem.

Which fix fits your situation?

  • You were holding buttons when it appeared: wait a minute, then use the combination and Reboot system now.
  • It appeared after an update: charge the phone, use the combination, reboot.
  • Nothing happens when you press the keys: force a restart, then check for a stuck button.
  • It keeps coming back: back up if you can, then factory reset.
  • The reset does not help: warranty and repair.

Frequently asked questions

What does "No command" mean on Android?

It means the phone is in the recovery system and is waiting for a command. The robot with the exclamation mark is the gate to the recovery menu, not an error that wipes anything.

How do I get out of the Android No command screen?

Hold Power, press Volume up once and release both quickly. On a Pixel this opens the recovery menu, where you choose Reboot system now. If nothing happens, hold Power for about 30 seconds to force a restart.

Will I lose my data if my phone shows No command?

Not from the screen itself. Data is lost only if you choose Wipe data or Factory reset in the recovery menu. Choose Reboot system now to leave without erasing anything.

Why does my phone keep going back to No command?

A failed update, damaged system files or a stuck button can send it back each time it starts. If it loops after you choose Reboot system now, the next step is a factory reset or a service visit.
