Samsung stuck on logo? 6 fixes for a Galaxy boot loop

A Galaxy phone should show the Samsung logo for a few seconds and then move on to the lock screen. When it stays on the logo, or the logo keeps returning, Android is failing to start. Most of the time that is a software fault, and the first four fixes below keep your data. The factory reset is at the end for a reason.

Why is my Samsung stuck on the logo?

The common causes are an update that stopped halfway, damaged system files, an app that crashes at startup, a nearly full storage drive, or a battery too low to finish starting. After a drop or water damage, the cause may be hardware. The fix depends on which one it is, so it helps to know what changed just before the problem began.

• After an update: the update may have failed. Cache wipe or a software reinstall usually fixes it.
• After installing an app: safe mode is the best test, then remove the app.
• After a drop or water: hardware is likely. Go to a service center and do not keep charging it.
• Nothing changed: start with a long charge and a force restart, then work down the list.

Is it stuck or just slow to start?

After a big One UI update, the first start can take several minutes while Android optimizes apps. You may see the logo, then a progress message. Leave the phone plugged in for about 15 minutes. If the screen has not changed at all in that time, it is stuck. A phone that shows the logo, goes black and shows it again is in a boot loop, which means it cannot finish starting at all.

Charge it, then force restart

A Galaxy with a deeply drained battery can loop on the logo because it cannot draw enough power to finish starting. Use a wall outlet and the charger that came with the phone, or another good Samsung or USB-PD charger, and leave it for 30 minutes to an hour. Avoid a computer USB port, which often gives too little power. Then hold Side and Volume Down for about 10 seconds until the screen goes dark and the logo returns.

On older Galaxy phones with a Home button or a removable battery, the steps differ. If the battery comes out, remove it for 30 seconds, put it back and try again. Disconnect anything plugged into the phone and take out a memory card or SIM while you test, since a faulty card can stop some phones from starting.

Try safe mode to find a bad app

Safe mode loads Android with your downloaded apps switched off. Turn the phone off if you can, power it on, and as soon as the Samsung logo appears, hold Volume Down until the lock screen shows. You will see Safe mode in the lower left corner. If the phone gets that far, the cause is probably an app.

Open Settings › Apps and uninstall what you added most recently, starting with launchers, cleaners, VPNs and apps from outside the Galaxy Store and Play Store. Restart normally afterward. If safe mode also sticks on the logo, move on to recovery mode.

How to wipe the cache partition on a Samsung

The cache partition holds temporary system files. A damaged cache after an update is a classic reason for a Galaxy to hang on the logo, and clearing it does not touch your photos, apps or messages. Turn the phone off. On most current Galaxy phones, connect a USB cable to a computer or charger, then hold Side and Volume Up together until the Samsung logo appears and the Android Recovery menu opens.

In the menu, use Volume Up and Volume Down to move and the Side key to select. Choose Wipe cache partition, confirm, then pick Reboot system now. The first start afterward is slower than normal. Newer phones may show a touch friendly recovery screen, but the options are the same. Button combinations vary by model, so if yours does not respond, check Samsung’s support page for your exact phone.

Factory reset from recovery mode

If the cache wipe does not help, Wipe data/factory reset is the next option. It erases everything on the phone and puts the software back to its original state. Do this only when you have run out of safer choices. After the reset, you will sign in with your Samsung and Google accounts, and the phone offers to restore from your backup.

Can I save my files before I reset?

If the phone will not start, you cannot copy files off it the usual way. Check whether your photos were backed up: look at Google Photos or Samsung Cloud online, or OneDrive if you linked it. Contacts and calendar usually sync with your account as well. If you cannot afford to lose the files, ask a service center whether they can recover data before they reflash the phone. Results are not guaranteed.

When to go to Samsung service

If a factory reset does not stop the loop, a technician can reinstall the firmware with Samsung’s own tools, which fixes problems that the recovery menu cannot. That works when the hardware is healthy. If the loop continues after a fresh install, a failed battery, storage chip or main board is the likely cause. Stop charging a phone that is swollen or very hot, and take it in.

Repair, replace or trade in?

Check your warranty first. Samsung phones carry a limited manufacturer warranty, and some people also have Samsung Care Plus or carrier insurance. A phone that fails to start with no sign of damage may be covered. Coverage rules vary by country, model and plan, so ask Samsung or your carrier instead of guessing.

If the phone is out of warranty, get a repair quote first. A software reflash is usually inexpensive. A battery or board repair costs more, and on an older phone it can approach what the phone is worth. When a phone no longer gets security updates, putting the money toward a newer model or a trade in may make more sense.

How to avoid a boot loop

• Keep the phone charged above about 30% before you start a software update, and do not interrupt it.
• Keep some storage free. Phones with almost no free space struggle to start and update.
• Install apps from the Galaxy Store or Play Store only.
• Turn on a backup for photos and data.
• Restart the phone every week or so.
