How to factory reset a Samsung phone (Settings or buttons)
A factory reset wipes your Galaxy back to how it came out of the box. Do three things first so you keep your data and nobody gets locked out.
Before you reset
- Back up. Use Smart Switch to a computer or new phone, or Settings › Accounts and backup › Back up data for Samsung Cloud and Google.
- Know your passwords. You need your Google account password to set the phone up again after a reset.
- Selling or giving it away? Remove your Google and Samsung accounts in Settings › Accounts and backup › Manage accounts, so the next owner is not blocked.
The fix
Method 1: reset from Settings

Open Settings and tap General management.

Tap Reset, then Factory data reset.

Scroll down and tap Reset.

Enter your PIN, pattern or password, and your Samsung account password if asked.

Tap Delete all. The phone restarts to the setup screen when done.
The fix
Method 2: reset with the buttons (recovery mode)
Use this if the phone is frozen or you cannot reach Settings.

Turn the phone off.
If it is frozen, hold the side key and volume down for about 10 seconds first.

Hold volume up and the side key until the Samsung logo appears, then let go.
On many newer Galaxy phones, connect the phone to a computer with a USB cable first, or recovery mode will not open.

Use the volume keys to select Wipe data/factory reset, and press the side key.

Select Factory data reset and press the side key to confirm.

When it finishes, choose Reboot system now.

After a reset, the phone asks for the Google account that was on it before. It stops thieves from using a stolen phone. If you are selling, remove your Google and Samsung accounts before resetting.
Does a factory reset remove everything on a Samsung phone?
It removes apps, accounts, photos and files stored on the phone. It does not erase a removable SD card unless you choose to format it.
