YouTube keeps buffering? 9 fixes for smooth playback

Is it YouTube or your connection?

Open another video app or run a speed test. If everything is slow, fix the connection first. If only YouTube struggles, jump to the app fixes.

Why does YouTube buffer?

Buffering happens when the video arrives slower than it plays. YouTube loads a few seconds ahead so playback stays smooth, and when that cushion runs out, the picture freezes and the circle appears. The cause is almost always one of three things: not enough speed to your phone, a problem between your phone and the router, or a slowdown on the path to YouTube's servers, such as a VPN. The app itself is the cause less often, which is why changing the video quality and the network usually fixes it faster than reinstalling anything.

How fast does your connection need to be?

• 480p: roughly 1 to 2 Mbps of steady speed.
• 720p: around 3 to 4 Mbps.
• 1080p: about 5 Mbps, as YouTube suggests.
• 4K: about 20 Mbps.

These are the speeds the video needs on its own. Everyone else in the home shares the same line, so a family streaming on two TVs while you watch on your phone needs far more. Run a speed test from your phone while you are in the room where the buffering happens, not next to the router. A speed test near the router can look perfect while the back bedroom gets a fraction of it.

Wi-Fi fixes that help most

• Move closer to the router or remove walls, mirrors and metal shelves between you and it.
• Use the 5 GHz network if your router offers one. It is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, but it covers a shorter distance.
• Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds. Routers that run for months slow down.
• Turn off devices that eat bandwidth, such as game downloads, cloud backups and other video streams.
• If your home is large, a mesh system or an extender helps far more than any phone setting.

Buffering on cellular data

On cellular, the signal bars and the network type matter. A phone showing one bar or 3G cannot stream HD video. Move to a window or outdoors and test again. Check that you have not used up high-speed data, since many plans slow you down after a limit and some prepaid plans cap video quality. On iPhone, Low Data Mode (Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options) and on Android, Data Saver (Settings › Network & internet) can cut video quality or pause loading. Turn them off for a test. Pick the right video quality

Tap the gear icon on the video, then Quality. Auto lets YouTube choose based on speed, but sometimes it picks too high and stalls. Choose 480p or 720p by hand for a smooth picture, especially on a phone screen, where 1080p looks only slightly better. In the YouTube app, you can also open your profile picture, then Settings › Video quality preferences and set Data saver on mobile networks, which keeps cellular streaming lighter.

VPNs, DNS and ad blockers

A VPN sends all your traffic through another server, which often cuts speed by a lot and adds delay. Turn it off and try again. Private DNS or ad-blocking DNS services can also slow some videos, because YouTube serves ads and video from related addresses. If the problem began after you changed DNS or installed a blocker, turn it off for a test. Also check whether your phone is set to use a proxy for work or school.

Fix the YouTube app itself

• Update YouTube and restart the phone.
• Android: Settings › Apps › YouTube › Storage › Clear cache.
• iPhone: delete and reinstall the app. Your account keeps your subscriptions and history.

Buffering only on one device or one video

If it happens on your phone but not your laptop, the phone's Wi-Fi, storage or app is the cause. If it happens on every device at home, the router or the internet plan is the cause. If it happens only with one video, the file may be long, high resolution or live, and a lower quality usually fixes it. Live streams buffer more because they cannot load far ahead. If you cast to a TV, the TV's own Wi-Fi may be the weak link, so check its connection or plug it in with a cable.

When to call your internet provider

If a wired speed test is far below what you pay for, restart the modem and router, then call your provider. Ask them to check the line, the modem and any outage in your area. In the evening, many networks get busy, so test at different times. If the speed is fine and only YouTube is slow, ask whether your provider throttles video, which some mobile plans do for video above a certain quality. Check your plan terms before you blame the app.

Download videos to avoid buffering

If you watch the same place every day and the signal is weak, download videos at home on Wi-Fi first. YouTube Premium lets you save videos for offline viewing. Without Premium, you can still use YouTube Music or other apps that offer downloads for their own content. Downloads play without a spinner, because the whole file is already on the phone. Remember to delete them later, since they take storage.

Improve your home network for good

• Place the router in the middle of the home, up high, and away from microwaves and cordless phones.
• Use a wired connection for TVs and game consoles, which frees Wi-Fi for phones.
• Pick a router that supports Wi-Fi 6 or newer if you have many devices.
• Rename the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks differently so you can choose the better one.
• Update your router firmware, and replace one that is more than five years old.

A better plan costs more, but a small change such as moving the router often fixes more than upgrading speed.

Check the time of day and other users

If buffering happens at the same time each day, other people at home are likely streaming or downloading. Ask them to pause large downloads, or set quality limits on the TV. Your router app may show which device uses the most data.

If you try all of this and one place in your home still buffers, the fix is the network there, not the phone. Test in another room before you spend money.
