Android 17 update not showing? 8 reasons and how to fix it
If the Android 17 update is not showing, the cause is usually your model, a staged rollout, a carrier delay or a beta enrollment. Here are the eight reasons, a check path that works and what to do while you wait.

Google began rolling out the first stable Android 17 on June 16, 2026, and months later plenty of people are still asking the same thing: where is it? You check Settings, it says your phone is up to date, and a friend has the new features already. That is frustrating, but it is rarely a sign that something is wrong with your phone. Android updates are released in waves, they depend on your brand and sometimes your carrier, and a beta enrollment can quietly hold you back. This guide lists eight reasons the update may not show, a check path that works, and what to do on Pixel, Samsung and other phones. It also says when waiting is the honest answer.
Why is the Android 17 update not showing on my phone?
- Your phone is not on the list. Droid Life lists Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a and newer, the Pixel Tablet and the original Pixel Fold. An older Pixel is not on it.
- You do not own a Pixel. TechRepublic says most non-Pixel phones have to wait for their maker to ship Android 17.
- The rollout is staged. Updates reach phones in waves, so yours may be a few days or weeks behind.
- You are in the Android beta program. Droid Life says enrolled phones keep getting beta updates instead of the stable one.
- Your carrier has not approved it. Some updates depend on the model and on your carrier.
- You have not checked by hand. The phone may not have looked yet.
- Not enough storage, battery or a bad connection. An update will not download without them.
- Your phone is already on Android 17. Check the version before you search for the update.
Step 1: Check which Android version you have
Open Settings, tap About phone and look for Android version. If it already says 17, there is nothing to download, and you can skip to the features. If it says 16 or older, carry on. On Samsung and some other brands the path is Settings, About phone, Software information. Write down the version and your model name, because both matter for the rest of the steps.
Step 2: Check for the update by hand
The fix
Check for the update on a Pixel
- 1
Connect to Wi-Fi and plug the phone in if it is below 50 percent.
- 2
Open Settings and tap System.
- 3
Tap System updates, then System update.
- 4
Tap Check for update.
Droid Life gives this same path: Settings, System, System updates, System update, Check for update.
- 5
If an update appears, tap Download and install.
On a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings, tap Software update and tap Download and install. On other brands, look for Software update or System update in Settings. If the screen says your phone is up to date, the update has not reached it yet. Try again the next day, since rollouts can take time. Step 3: Check whether you are in the beta program
If you joined the Android beta earlier, your phone will keep getting beta builds. Droid Life says that phones enrolled in the Android 17 Beta will keep receiving beta updates instead of the stable one. To move to stable you normally leave the beta program on Google's website, then wait for the update, and Google may ask you to reset the phone. Android Authority has reported a case where a beta build was stuck because an older stable build had a higher patch level, and Google later said it had deployed a fix. A reset deletes your data, so back up first and read Google's own instructions before you do it.
Step 4: Free up storage and power
A major Android update needs space for the download and for the install, which is often several gigabytes. If your phone is nearly full, the update may not show or may fail halfway. Open Settings, tap Storage and see how much is free. Delete apps you do not use, move photos to the cloud and clear downloads. Our guide to an Android phone with full storage has the steps. Keep the battery above 50 percent and stay on Wi-Fi, not mobile data.
Step 5: Restart and check again
Restart the phone, wait a minute and check for the update again. This clears a stuck update service on some phones. If you use a VPN, turn it off for the check, and make sure the date and time are set automatically in Settings, System, Date and time. If a Wi-Fi network blocks Google services, try mobile data or a different network just for the download.
What if I have a Samsung, OnePlus or Motorola?
Then the date is up to your maker. TechRepublic notes that for most non-Pixel users the stable update remains a manufacturer by manufacturer wait. Brands add their own layer on top of Android, so each one has to build, test and release. Check the maker's support page and our update tracker for what we know. Do not install an Android build made for another brand's phone. That can break the phone and void the warranty.
| Your situation | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 6 or newer, not in the beta | Staged rollout | Check by hand and try again in a few days |
| Pixel, enrolled in the Android beta | Beta builds continue | Leave the beta program, back up first |
| Pixel 5 or older | Not on the supported list | Stay on your last version or look at a new phone |
| Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola | Waiting for the maker | Watch the maker's support page |
| Any phone, update will not download | Storage, battery or Wi-Fi | Free space, charge, use Wi-Fi |
Should I flash the update by hand?
Droid Life says that factory images and OTA files will be posted later on Google's developer sites for manual flashing. That route is for Pixel owners who are comfortable with it, and it carries risk: a mistake can wipe the phone, and a wrong file can stop it from starting. If you just want the update, waiting a few days costs nothing. If you do flash, back up the phone first, use the file for your exact model and follow Google's steps, not a video from a stranger.
Is it worth waiting for Android 17?
For most people, yes, but not urgently. Reports on Android 17 mention bubbles for almost any app, screen reactions for recordings and security changes such as temporary precise location access and a biometrics-only Mark as lost option in Find Hub. See our guide to Android 17 bubbles for the feature people ask about most. Security updates matter more over time, so do not skip them. If the update changes your battery or speed for the worse, our guide on Android battery drain can help.
When an old phone is the real problem
If your phone is on the list for no more updates, the real question is how long it is safe to keep using. Old software misses security fixes. Before you pay for a new phone, check what yours is worth in a trade-in. See how a phone trade-in works for what to expect, and compare it with the price of a battery or screen repair if the phone is otherwise fine.
Still no Android 17?
If your Pixel is on the list, is not in the beta, has space and still shows no update after a week, wait a few more days and check again. If it never appears, ask Google support and give them your model name and Android version. On other brands, the answer is the maker's schedule. Until then, keep the phone updated with the monthly security patches.
