How to find your phone number on iPhone and Android (even if it shows Unknown)

Forgot your own number? It is in Settings in two taps. Here is where, on every phone, and what to do when it says Unknown.

It is more common than you would think to forget your own number, especially after switching carriers or getting a second line. The number is stored on your SIM or eSIM, and your phone can show it in a few taps. This guide lists the quickest methods for each phone, shows what to do if it says Unknown or is blank and covers ways to find a number when you do not have the phone in hand.

How to find your number on an iPhone

The fix

Settings method

  1. 1

    Open Settings and tap Phone.

On older versions of iOS, it is under Settings › Phone, and on newer ones it is in Settings › Apps › Phone.

  2. 2

Look at My Number at the top.

It shows your phone number. On a dual SIM iPhone, tap the line you want to see.

  3. 3

Or open Settings › General › About.

Look for Phone Number or the entries under Available SIM. On some versions, you will find it here instead.

  • Contacts app: open Contacts and tap your name at the top, or go to Settings › Contacts › My Info and choose your card.
  • Messages: open Settings › Messages › Send & Receive, and see the numbers and emails that iMessage uses.
  • FaceTime: open Settings › FaceTime and see Your number at the top.

How to find your number on an Android phone

  1. 1

Open Settings and tap About phone.

On some phones it is under System, and then About phone.

  2. 2

    Look for Phone number.

Pixels show it here. On Samsung, tap Status information and then SIM card status, or Phone number.

  3. 3

On a dual SIM phone, tap each SIM to see its number.

Settings › Connections › SIM manager lists them too.

  4. 4

If it does not show, try the Phone or Messages app.

In Google Messages, tap your profile picture, then Messages settings, and look for your number or Verify phone number.

Other ways to find your number

  • Call or text a friend. Their phone shows your number. Ask them to read it back, and save it.
  • Your carrier app or website. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and others list your number on the home page or account page.
  • Your bill or an email from your carrier. Each line is listed with its number.
  • The SIM packaging or the welcome text. New SIMs often come with a card that shows the number.
  • Dial a carrier code. Some carriers let you dial a short code, such as 611, to reach customer service, who can tell you your number after you verify your account.

Your number shows Unknown or is blank

  1. 1

Restart the phone and check again.

Sometimes the number shows up after a restart.

  2. 2

Turn Airplane Mode on and off.

This makes the phone reconnect and re-read the SIM.

  3. 3

On iPhone, edit the number by hand.

Open Settings › Phone › My Number and type it in. This changes only what your phone displays, not your actual number.

  4. 4

Check for an iOS or carrier settings update.

Open Settings › General › About, and Software Update.

  5. 5

Take out the SIM and put it back.

See how to remove a SIM card.

  6. 6

    Contact your carrier.

They can check that the SIM is linked to your number and refresh the line.

What if you have two numbers?

Dual SIM phones, and phones with an eSIM and a physical SIM, show a separate number for each line. iPhones label them Primary and Secondary, or by names you set, and Androids show SIM 1 and SIM 2. Each can have its own number, carrier and plan. Check which line is used for calls, texts and mobile data in your SIM settings. If you are not sure which number belongs to which line, call a friend using each line, or look at your carrier accounts.

Why you might need your number

  • Signing up for services and verification codes.
  • Switching carriers and moving the number.

Moving your number needs a PIN, see how to get a number transfer PIN. If you want to confirm the network, read how to find out which carrier your phone uses. You might also need to set up voicemail, see how to set up voicemail on an iPhone.

Keep your number safe

  • Do not post your number publicly, which invites spam calls and scam texts.
  • Add a PIN and a number lock to your carrier account.
  • Be careful about who you give it to, and what accounts depend on it.
