iPhone flashlight turns on by itself? 7 ways to stop it
The flashlight is almost never turning on by itself. A button on the Lock Screen gets pressed by accident. Seven ways to stop it, from Tap to Wake to the Action button, plus how to tell if something is really wrong.

You reach into your pocket and your leg is lit up. Or you walk past someone and your phone is shining a beam at the floor. It feels like the phone has a mind of its own. It does not. The flashlight on an iPhone is not turning itself on. A button on the Lock Screen is getting pressed when you do not mean it, and that button is hard to avoid. This guide explains exactly why it happens, seven ways to cut it down, and how to tell the rare case where something else is wrong. None of the fixes need a repair or a download.
Why does my iPhone flashlight turn on by itself?
The Lock Screen has two round buttons in the bottom corners, the Flashlight on the left and the Camera on the right. A firm press on either one starts it. When the screen wakes up in a pocket, a bag or a hand, a finger or the fabric can press the Flashlight button by accident. Users report that it also happens when they pick the phone up to unlock it. Macworld says that Apple does not offer a way to remove the Flashlight or Camera button from the Lock Screen. That is why the fixes below focus on stopping the screen waking up by accident, and on making the button harder to hit.
- Raise to Wake or Tap to Wake lights the screen. Once the Lock Screen is awake, the button can be pressed.
- Pocket and bag pressure. Keys, fabric and other objects can press the glass.
- A press while unlocking. The button sits near where your thumb rests.
- A case or screen protector with a raised edge. It can hold pressure on the corner.
- Other shortcuts. A Back Tap or a Shortcuts automation can turn the flashlight on.
- A fault in the touch screen. Rare, and the last thing to suspect.
Fix 1: Turn off Tap to Wake
The fix
Stop the screen waking up when touched
- 1
Open Settings and tap Accessibility.
- 2
Tap Touch.
- 3
Turn off Tap or Swipe to Wake.
The name can differ by iOS version, and one source gives a different path through General, so look for the same switch on your screen.
The trade-off is that you must press the side button to wake the iPhone before you use Face ID or a passcode. For many people that is a fair price. A phone that does not wake when something brushes it cannot show the Flashlight button, so this fix cuts down the most pocket accidents.
Fix 2: Lock the iPhone before you put it away
A forum reply that Macworld's guide and others repeat says that if you lock the screen before the phone goes into a pocket, the flashlight should not come on. Press the side button once and see the screen go dark before you put the phone away. This is a user observation, not an Apple fix, but it costs nothing and fits what the cause is. If your phone wakes up every time it moves, combine this with Fix 1.
Fix 3: Put the flashlight on the Action button
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, you can assign the Action button to the flashlight. Open Settings, tap Action Button and swipe to Flashlight. The button needs a deliberate press of about a second, which is hard to do by accident. This is not about removing the Lock Screen button. It is about giving you a better way to reach the light, so you stop using the screen button at all. On models without an Action button, use Control Center, or the next fix.
Fix 4: Use Back Tap or Control Center instead
You can still reach the flashlight on purpose in other ways. In Control Center, tap the flashlight icon. On Face ID models, swipe down from the top right corner. You can also set Back Tap to open it with a shortcut, though Apple's own Back Tap page lists actions such as Control Center and Accessibility Shortcuts, so check which one fits. If your Back Tap is acting up, see why Back Tap is not working. Ask Siri if your hands are full: say Hey Siri, turn on the flashlight.
Fix 5: Check your case and screen protector
A tight case with raised edges can press on the bottom corners of the glass, especially when the phone is squeezed in a pocket. A cheap or badly fitted screen protector can also do it. Take the case off for a day and see if the flashlight stops coming on. If it does, switch to a case with a flatter lip or a bigger gap at the corners. If you use a tempered glass protector, make sure it is not lifting at the edges.
Fix 6: Check for other triggers
If the light comes on with the phone sitting on a table, look at what else could be starting it. Open Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Back Tap and see whether an action is set to the flashlight. Open the Shortcuts app, tap Automation and look for a rule that turns the flashlight on at a time or place. Check Control Center for a flashlight that someone added and set to a custom control. If you share the iPhone with a child, they may be pressing the button on purpose. Remove what you do not use.
Fix 7: Restart, update and check the touch screen
If the light turns on with the phone locked on a table and nothing is touching it, something may be wrong with the software or the screen. Restart the iPhone, then open Settings, tap General, tap Software Update and install anything waiting. For the steps in full, see how to update an iPhone. If other things on the screen react on their own too, such as apps opening or the keyboard typing letters, read what to do when the touch screen does not respond properly. A phone that does this with nothing touching it should be checked by Apple Support.
| When it happens | Most likely cause | Try |
|---|---|---|
| In a pocket or bag | Lock Screen button pressed | Fix 1 and Fix 2 |
| When you pick the phone up | Thumb on the corner button | Fix 1 and Fix 3 |
| Only with one case on | Case presses the glass | Fix 5 |
| With the phone on a table | A shortcut, Back Tap or a fault | Fix 6 and Fix 7 |
How do I turn it off fast?
If you find the beam already on, the quickest way is a slight swipe left or a tap on the flashlight icon on the Lock Screen. You can also open Control Center and tap the flashlight. Siri works too: say Hey Siri, turn off the flashlight. If your hands are full, Siri is the easiest option.
Is it bad for the battery or the phone?
A flashlight left on in a pocket uses charge and can make the iPhone warm, and a hot phone in a pocket is not good for it. If it happens a lot, you may see the battery fall faster than you expect. Apple does not publish a figure for the drain, so we cannot give one. Switch it off, then watch the battery over a day. If it still drains fast with the light off, see why an iPhone battery drains fast. If the phone gets very hot, stop using it.
Still turning on by itself?
Try Fix 1 and Fix 2 together for a week. These two cover most cases. If the light still comes on with nothing touching the phone, and a restart and an update did not help, the touch screen may be faulty. Contact Apple Support, an Apple Store or an authorized service provider, and say that the flashlight turns on with the phone locked and untouched. If the opposite is your problem, see a flashlight that will not turn on.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone flashlight turn on by itself?
It is almost always the Flashlight button at the bottom left of the Lock Screen being pressed by accident, often in a pocket or bag. Turning off Tap to Wake or locking the phone before you pocket it usually stops it.
Can I remove the flashlight button from the iPhone Lock Screen?
Macworld reports that Apple does not offer a way to remove the Flashlight or Camera button from the Lock Screen. You can reduce accidental taps with Tap to Wake and by using a different control for the flashlight.
How do I turn off the flashlight on my iPhone quickly?
Swipe up on the Lock Screen or use Control Center and tap the flashlight icon. You can also say Hey Siri, turn off the flashlight.
Will the flashlight drain my battery if it stays on in my pocket?
