Android phone keeps freezing? 9 fixes that stop the lag

A frozen screen that will not scroll, tap or turn off is one of the most annoying Android problems. It can happen once after a bad app update, or it can become daily and make the phone hard to use. The cause is almost always one of four things: not enough storage, a faulty app, old software, or heat. Hardware failure is rarer, but it does happen on older phones. Work through the fixes below in order, and check the symptoms first, because they point you to the right one.

Why your phone freezes

• Storage almost full, which leaves no room for the system to work.
• A buggy or badly made app, often a recent install.
• Old software with a known bug.
• Heat from charging, gaming or sun.

What your freezing pattern tells you

• Freezes in one app only: the app is the problem. Update it, clear its cache and reinstall it.
• Freezes right after you turn the phone on: too many apps start at once, or storage is full. Free space and remove apps you never use.
• Freezes when the phone is hot: heat is slowing the processor. Cool the phone and look for apps running in the background.
• Freezes after an update: a bug in the new version. Check for a newer update and restart the phone.
• Freezes at random, even right after a restart: a faulty app, a failing storage chip or a hardware problem.

How to force restart by brand

• Samsung Galaxy: hold Volume Down and the side key together for about 10 seconds until the logo appears.
• Google Pixel: hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
• Motorola: hold the power button for up to 30 seconds.
• OnePlus and others: hold Power and Volume Down for 10 to 20 seconds.

How much storage should be free?

Android needs free space to run apps, save temporary files and install updates. Google advises keeping at least 10 percent of storage free, and many phones start to lag when storage drops below that. Update the system, Play Store and WebView

Besides the main system update, apps depend on shared components that update through the Play Store. Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, then Update all. Look in the list for Android System WebView and Google Chrome and make sure both are current, because many apps freeze when the web components behind them are out of date. Find the app that freezes the phone

If safe mode fixes the freezing, start removing apps, beginning with the most recent ones. Pay extra attention to cleaner and booster apps, free VPNs, custom launchers, keyboard apps and anything with floating widgets over other apps, because they run constantly and often cause trouble. Samsung Device care and Auto optimization

On a Galaxy, open Settings › Battery and device care. Tap Optimize now, and check Memory to close apps running in the background. Tap Storage to clean up, and Auto optimization to set the phone to optimize itself daily. Device care does not fix a broken app, but it can clear a heavy load after a long time without a restart.

Developer options and other settings that cause lag

If you ever turned on Developer options, check that Limit background processes is set to Standard limit and that animation scales are at 1x. A low background limit makes apps reload constantly and can make the phone feel frozen. Also check Settings › Apps for apps you disabled, because disabling a system app can cause strange hangs. Live wallpapers, many home screen widgets and animated themes also use memory all the time. On a phone with 3 or 4 GB of RAM, a plain wallpaper and fewer widgets make a visible difference. Restart the phone more often

A phone that has run for weeks without a restart builds up small problems, such as apps that leaked memory or stuck background tasks. Restarting once or twice a week clears them. Is an old phone the problem?

Phones slow down as apps and Android grow heavier while the hardware stays the same. A phone that is five or more years old, has little RAM, or no longer gets updates may simply be out of its depth. Back up before a factory reset

A reset erases everything, so back up first. Photos and videos go to Google Photos, contacts and calendar sync with your Google account, and Samsung users can also use Smart Switch or Samsung Cloud. When to take it to a repair shop

See a professional if the phone freezes after a reset, the screen is unresponsive in one area, the phone gets very hot while idle, or the back is swollen.
