iPhone Duo screen cracking: what Apple says and what to do
Within days of the iPhone Duo going on sale, owners reported inner screens cracking along the hinge. Apple has now responded. Here is what is confirmed, what is only speculation, what a repair costs and the steps to take if your screen fails.

The iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23, 2026, and within two days owners were posting photos of broken inner screens. If you own one, are about to buy one, or are only following the story, the useful question is what is actually known. This guide separates the confirmed facts from the guesses, then gives you the steps to follow if your screen fails. It is based on reports published up to October 26, and it will change as Apple says more.
What are owners reporting?
The most detailed report so far is from 9to5Mac, published on October 25. It describes the cracks like this:
- Where: the inner display cracks along the center line of the hinge.
- What else you see: a horizontal row of pixels stays stuck glowing white after the crack appears.
- How many: about ten unique cases when the article was written, mostly posted on the r/iPhoneDuo subreddit. 9to5Mac says the scale remains unclear.
- How fast: some owners reported damage within hours of getting the phone, and a couple said it happened during first time setup.
The article describes the screens cracking on their own. It does not give details such as drops or pocket carry beyond the cases it mentions, so the circumstances of each failure are not clear.
What did Apple say about iPhone Duo screen cracking?
Apple responded on Monday, October 26. The statement, as posted by Mark Gurman and repeated by several outlets, reads: We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
Three things are worth noticing. Apple said a small number of units, not all of them. Apple told owners to ask for a replacement, not a repair. And Apple has not given a number, a cause or a timeline for a fix. We read the statement as relayed by others, because Apple's newsroom pages we checked did not carry it.
What is the cause? What we know and what we do not
Nobody outside Apple knows yet. 9to5Mac lists two theories and labels both as speculation:
- A batch of phones may have a faulty hinge part that is slightly misaligned and pokes up into the inner screen.
- Some people on social media suggest that pressing the middle of the inner screen while closing the phone could play a part. 9to5Mac says it is unclear whether that matters.
Other commentary points at the display cable that runs across the hinge, which would be a point of stress when the phone folds. Treat that as an outside opinion and not a confirmed cause. Until Apple explains, avoid anyone who tells you exactly why it happens or how to prevent it.
What to do if your iPhone Duo inner screen cracks
Follow these steps in order. They combine Apple's advice with common sense, and where a step is our own advice we say so.
If the inner display fails
- 1
Stop folding and unfolding the phone.
This is our advice. Repeated folding on a cracked display can make the damage worse or spread it.
- 2
Take clear photos and a short video.
Show the whole screen, the hinge line and the white row of pixels. Note the date, and what happened just before. This is our advice, and it helps if there is a dispute later.
- 3
Back up what you can.
If the phone still responds, back it up to iCloud or a computer before you do anything else.
- 4
Contact AppleCare.
Apple's statement tells affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Use the Apple Support app or the Apple support website to start.
- 5
Go to an Apple Store if you can.
9to5Mac reports that most buyers who went to an Apple Store got a straight replacement. Stock may be limited, so you may have to wait.
- 6
Ask for the outcome in writing.
Ask whether the replacement is free for this issue, and keep the receipt or case number.
What if you bought it from a carrier?
9to5Mac reports that carrier customers have had less luck. Carriers lacked replacement stock, and one customer was told the phone must have been dropped and that they would have to pay for the repair. These are individual reports, not a policy. If you bought from a carrier, contact the carrier, but also contact AppleCare yourself and quote Apple's statement. If you are told to pay, ask for the reason in writing before you agree.
How much does an iPhone Duo screen repair cost?
If the problem is covered as a defect, Apple's statement suggests a replacement, and the cost questions do not arise. If it is treated as accidental damage, the bill matters. These are Apple's estimates as reported by 9to5Mac on October 14, before the cracking reports. They are estimates, because Apple authorized service providers can set their own fees.
| Damage | Out of warranty | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Inner display | $999 | $99 |
| Outer display | $379 | Lower, see Apple's page |
| Back glass | $199 | Lower, see Apple's page |
| Cover layer | $49 | Lower, see Apple's page |
| Battery service | $229 | Free, according to 9to5Mac |
| Other damage | $1,499 | Lower, see Apple's page |
9to5Mac says AppleCare+ adds $19.99 a month and reduces these costs considerably. We only quote the figures the article gives. For the parts where it gave no AppleCare+ price, check Apple's own page. Our guide to whether AppleCare is worth it explains how to weigh the monthly fee against a repair.
Should you still buy an iPhone Duo?
That depends on your tolerance for risk. A first generation device with a new hinge design is a bigger bet than a normal phone. The reports so far involve a small number of units, and Apple is replacing them, but the cause is unknown. Here are some questions to ask yourself.
- Can you wait a few weeks for more information and for stock to improve?
- Are you buying where returns are easy? Check the return window before you pay.
- Would you buy AppleCare+ at launch? With a $999 out of warranty inner screen estimate, many people will want it.
- Do you need a foldable now, or is it curiosity? If it is curiosity, waiting costs you little.

What does a replacement mean for your data and your plan?
A replacement phone arrives blank, so you set it up again and restore from a backup. That is one more reason to keep an iCloud backup current. If the phone uses an eSIM, ask your carrier how to move the line to the new unit, because the eSIM does not follow the old phone automatically. Our guide to moving an eSIM to a new iPhone lists the steps. Also check whether your AppleCare+ plan carries over to the replacement, and ask for that to be confirmed when the swap is done.
How to care for a foldable until Apple explains
These are general habits for any folding phone, not Apple instructions. Open and close it gently with both hands. Do not press on the middle of the inner screen. Keep grit and pocket lint away from the hinge. Do not use sharp objects on the display. Do not leave it in extreme heat. And keep a current backup, so that a failed screen costs you a replacement and not your photos.

What happens next?
Expect more reports, a possible explanation from Apple and, if the problem is a batch issue, a quiet change to new units. We will update this guide when Apple publishes anything beyond its short statement. Until then, the safest advice is simple: if your screen fails, document it and go to AppleCare, and if your screen is fine, use the phone normally and gently.
