Samsung phone vibrating for no reason? 8 fixes for random buzzing
A Samsung that buzzes with no new message is usually following a setting such as notification reminders, alert when picked up or a repeating app alert. Hardware comes last.

Your Galaxy buzzes on the table or in your pocket, you check it, and there is nothing new. No call, no text, no alert on the screen. It can happen once an hour or every few seconds, and it makes you wonder whether the phone is broken or hacked.
In most cases it is neither. Samsung phones have several features that vibrate quietly to remind you about things, and a few of them are on by default. The fixes below start with those settings, then move to apps, accessories and finally hardware. Menu names can differ a little between One UI versions, so use the search bar at the top of Settings if you cannot find an option.
Why is my Samsung phone vibrating for no reason?
- Reminders about old alerts. A feature called Notification reminder buzzes again if you have an unread alert.
- Pick-up alerts. The phone vibrates when you lift it if you missed a call or message.
- System vibration. Taps, gestures, the keyboard and navigation can each give a small buzz.
- A busy app. Chat, email, shopping and game apps can send repeated or silent alerts.
- NFC and cards. A bank card or tag inside a phone case can trigger the NFC reader again and again.
- Hardware. A loose or failing vibration motor is the least common cause.
Fix 1: Turn off Notification reminder
This is the top cause in Samsung Community threads. When you have an unread notification, the phone can vibrate on a schedule to remind you, even when you are not expecting anything.
- 1
Open Settings › Accessibility › Advanced settings.
- 2
Tap Notification reminder.
On some versions it sits under Settings › Notifications › Advanced settings, as a repeat alert option. Use the search bar and type reminder if you cannot find it.
- 3
Turn it off, or switch off vibration for the reminder.
Then clear any old notifications from the shade so nothing is left waiting.
Fix 2: Turn off Alert when phone picked up
With this feature on, your Galaxy vibrates when you pick it up after a missed call or message. If you carry the phone in a bag that shifts around, it can trigger when you do not mean to.
- 1
Open Settings › Advanced features › Motions and gestures.
- 2
Tap the switch next to Alert when phone picked up to turn it off.
Also look at Lift to wake and Smart alert on that screen, because both respond to movement.

Fix 3: Check system vibration and keyboard haptics
Samsung lets you set vibration separately for calls, notifications and the system. Open Settings › Sounds and vibration › Vibrate. Samsung lists four options there: call vibration, notification vibration, system vibration and vibration intensity.
- System vibration: turn off any switch you do not want, such as touch interactions or navigation gestures.
- Notification vibration: set it to a shorter pattern, or switch it off for all apps.
- Vibration intensity: lower it if the buzz is stronger than you like.
- Keyboard: open Settings › General management › Samsung Keyboard settings and check Vibration on keypress.
If the buzzing happens only when you touch the screen, this is almost always the answer. If it happens with the phone sitting still on a table, move on to the next fixes.
Fix 4: Find the app that keeps alerting
Some apps send silent alerts, update badges or sync in the background, and each one can give a short buzz. A good way to find the culprit is to look at your recent notifications.
- 1
Open Settings › Notifications › Advanced settings.
Turn on Notification history if it is off. Then the phone keeps a list of alerts, including ones that disappeared before you saw them.
- 2
Look through the history for an app that appears often.
- 3
Open Settings › Notifications › App notifications and turn off the app, or turn off its vibration.
Do this for one app at a time so you know which one it was.
Messaging, email, shopping, delivery and game apps are the usual suspects. Also check a smartwatch or fitness app, because it may be telling the phone to buzz when it syncs.
Fix 5: Look at NFC, wireless charging and the case
Some Samsung users report buzzing that only happens when the phone moves near a bank card or a transit card. If your case has a card slot, the card can sit close to the NFC antenna. The phone then reads it, and it vibrates each time. Take the card out for a day to test, or turn NFC off in Settings › Connections.
Charging can do something similar. A wireless charger that is not lined up can start and stop charging over and over, and some phones buzz each time it reconnects. Center the phone on the pad, try a different cable or adapter, and see if the buzzing stops.
Fix 6: Restart, then update the phone and apps
A restart clears stuck processes that may be sending false alerts. Hold the side button and volume down, then tap Restart. After that, open Settings › Software update › Download and install, and update your apps in the Galaxy Store and Google Play. Bugs in a new One UI release or in one app can cause strange vibrations, and a patch often fixes them.
Fix 7: Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode turns off all the apps you installed. If the phone stops buzzing in Safe Mode, a downloaded app is the cause. If it keeps buzzing, the cause is a Samsung setting or the hardware. Our guide to Safe Mode on Android shows how to start it and how to get out of it.
In Safe Mode, use the phone for an hour or two. If it is quiet, restart normally, then remove or disable apps one at a time, starting with the ones you installed most recently.
Fix 8: Run the vibration test and reset if needed
Samsung's own Samsung Members app can test the vibration motor. Open the app, go to Get help and look for Phone diagnostics. The name of the menu can change, but there is a vibration test that makes the motor run once. If the motor works when you test it, the problem is usually software, not the motor.
If every step so far fails, back up your data and reset the phone. Use our guide to backing up an Android phone first, then follow the steps to factory reset a Samsung. Set the phone up as new, without restoring every app at once, and watch whether the buzzing returns.
When the vibration motor is the problem
If the phone still buzzes in Safe Mode and after a reset, the vibration motor or its connection may be faulty. A drop, water damage and age can all do it. Signs are buzzing that has no pattern, a rattle or a grinding sound, or buzzing that gets worse when you press on the back of the phone.
- Check your warranty first, using our guide to checking phone warranty. A fault in the motor can be covered.
- If the phone had a spill, read about moisture warnings on a Samsung. Water can cause strange behavior.
- Ask a Samsung service center or an authorized repair shop for a quote. A new motor is a small repair on many models, but it depends on the phone.
Is it a virus or someone spying on me?
It is very unlikely. Random vibration is not a sign of a hacked phone. It comes from settings, apps or hardware, as above. If you downloaded an app from outside the Play Store, or you see ads and apps you did not install, run a scan and remove it. Otherwise, you can relax.
How to stop it from coming back
- Keep Notification reminder and Alert when phone picked up off unless you use them.
- Use notification history now and then to spot apps that alert too often.
- Take bank cards out of the phone case, or use a case with no card slot.
- Install updates for One UI and your apps when they appear.
- Use a certified charger and cable, and center the phone on a wireless pad.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Samsung vibrate when there is no notification?
Common causes are a notification reminder that buzzes about old alerts, the alert when phone picked up feature, system vibration for taps and gestures, or an app that sends silent alerts. Cards stored in a phone case can also set off the NFC reader.
Why does my Samsung vibrate while charging?
Some phones buzz when a charger connects or when a wireless charger is misaligned and keeps starting and stopping. Try a different cable or charger, center the phone on the pad and check Sounds and vibration for a charging sound or vibration option.
How do I stop all vibration on a Samsung phone?
Open Settings › Sounds and vibration, tap Vibrate, and turn off call, notification and system vibration. You can also set the Sound mode to Mute so the phone stays silent without vibrating.
Is a Samsung that vibrates by itself broken?
Usually not. Most cases are settings or apps. If the buzzing continues in Safe Mode and after a factory reset, the vibration motor or a connection to it may be failing and the phone needs repair.
